They are a collagen-and-mineral material that can be processed into collagen peptides, gelatin, hydroxyapatite and research biomaterials. Human studies cited in a 2025 review involve purified fish-collagen peptides—not raw or simply cooked scales—so those products should not be treated as interchangeable.
What fish scales are made of
Scales are structured composites rather than inert flakes. Recent review data describe approximately 30–40% organic collagen matrix and 60–70% mineral, mainly hydroxyapatite. The collagen framework provides flexibility, while the mineral phase adds hardness. This ordered, biocompatible structure is why scales interest food scientists, cosmetic formulators and biomedical researchers.
Composition varies with species, age, habitat and processing. A scale collected from a contaminated waterway is not automatically suitable for food, supplements or cosmetics, and washing alone does not standardize it.
Can you eat fish scales?
Some scales from edible fish can be cleaned, softened or milled, but a raw scale is not a standardized supplement or a validated treatment. Scales may carry microbes, environmental contaminants, residual tissue or processing chemicals. They are also tough to chew and digest unless specially processed.

The human evidence most relevant to “health benefits” concerns hydrolyzed fish-collagen peptides. A 2025 review describes clinical trials using 10 grams per day for 8–12 weeks, with reported improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle measures, plus reductions in pain related to osteoarthritis. Those findings do not show that eating untreated scales produces the same outcomes.
Fish consumption in general supplies protein and other nutrients, but broad fish-eating guidance should not be presented as evidence for swallowing scales specifically.

Potential health benefits: separate evidence from marketing
Skin
In the clinical trials summarized by the 2025 review, daily fish-collagen peptides were associated with better hydration and elasticity and fewer measured wrinkles after 8–12 weeks. These are product-specific findings: the dose, peptide profile, formulation and study population matter.

Joints
The same review reports improvements in osteoarthritis-related pain in trials of 10 grams of collagen peptides daily. This does not establish that collagen supplements repair cartilage, replace prescribed treatment or work for every joint condition.

Peptides made from fish by-products have shown antioxidant, antihypertensive, antimicrobial and antidiabetic activity in laboratory and early-stage studies. Such activity is a rationale for further research, not proof that a consumer product prevents or treats disease. Reviews continue to identify dose, reproducibility, safety, labeling and regulatory obstacles.
Pets
There is no evidence here establishing a safe or effective dose of raw fish scales or scale-derived collagen for dogs, cats or other pets. Do not give a pet loose scales, homemade scale powder or a human supplement without advice from a veterinarian. Species-specific nutrition, choking risk, allergies, contaminants and product additives all need to be considered.

Surprising non-food uses
Bone, cartilage and tissue engineering
Collagen and hydroxyapatite naturally resemble components of connective tissue and bone. Researchers therefore investigate scale-derived scaffolds for bone, cartilage, wound and corneal repair. The materials can be designed to degrade while new tissue forms, but experimental scaffolds are not the same as approved implants.
Food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredients
Extracted collagen and gelatin can serve as thickeners, films, capsules or formulation ingredients. Fish sources may be useful where mammalian materials raise religious, cultural or supply concerns. A finished product still needs appropriate purification, allergen declaration and regulatory authorization.
Water treatment
Treated scales and scale-based composites can adsorb metals. A systematic review reports more than 90% removal for lead, cadmium, chromium, zinc and copper under some optimized laboratory conditions. Those results do not make untreated scales a household water filter; real water chemistry, capacity, regeneration and disposal must be validated.

- Species and origin: Is the fish identified, and is the harvesting or farming area known?
- Processing: Were the scales cleaned, decontaminated and extracted under controlled conditions?
- Testing: Does the manufacturer provide current testing for heavy metals, microbes and other relevant contaminants?
- Ingredient identity: Is it collagen peptide, gelatin, hydroxyapatite or a mixture? These are not interchangeable.
- Dose and evidence: Does the label match a human study of that exact or comparable product?
- Allergen labeling: Fish-derived ingredients can matter to people with fish allergy and must be declared where required.
- Regulatory status: Food, cosmetic, dental and medical products follow different rules in different countries.
Hydroxyapatite requires particular caution in cosmetics. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety concluded that available information was insufficient to exclude genotoxic concerns for the assessed rod-shaped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in oral-care cosmetics, and stated that needle-shaped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles should not be used in cosmetics. A product’s “natural” origin does not remove the need to check particle specifications and exposure route.

A fish collagen peptides powder is the clearest consumer category when the goal is to evaluate the collagen-peptide evidence. The evidence does not validate eating raw scales, and a powder’s quality depends on its own manufacturing and testing.
Bottom line for readers and pet owners
Fish scales are valuable raw material, not a miracle food. Their collagen and hydroxyapatite can be recovered for supplements, cosmetics, biomaterials, packaging and water-treatment research. The best human evidence currently concerns specific hydrolyzed collagen-peptide products taken at studied doses. Untreated scales have not been shown in clinical trials to improve skin, joints or another health condition, and they should not be given to pets as an untested supplement.
