A parasitic lamprey feeds by clamping its circular suction disk onto a fish, embedding horny teeth for grip, and rasping through the scales and skin with a toothed tongue. Saliva containing anticoagulants keeps blood and other body fluids moving into the wound while the lamprey feeds. The details and outcome vary by species: Great Lakes sea lampreys can kill hosts, while Pacific lampreys usually release them alive.
The feeding process, step by step
1. It finds and seals onto a host
A parasitic juvenile approaches a fish and presses its disk-shaped oral mouth against the body. Muscles create suction, pulling the fish’s skin tightly against the mouth. Rows of hooked, horny teeth around the disk then embed in the host and keep the lamprey attached.
2. Its tongue cuts an opening
Lampreys are jawless fish, so they do not bite with hinged jaws. Instead, a central tongue carries hard cutting plates. The tongue moves in a piston-like or rocking action, rasping through scales, skin and underlying tissue to make a feeding hole. NOAA’s Feeding Mechanism of the Sea Lamprey describes this rocking motion as rasping a hole through the host’s skin and tissues.
3. Anticoagulant saliva keeps fluids flowing
Saliva released into the wound interferes with blood clotting. The lamprey then takes blood and other body fluids through the opening; some species also consume flesh or tissue. This is why “lampreys suck blood” is broadly accurate for sea lampreys but too narrow for every lamprey species.

4. It eventually detaches
The lamprey feeds during its parasitic stage and later leaves the host. Sea lampreys typically spend about 12–18 months feeding parasitically before migrating to spawn. A single Great Lakes sea lamprey was reported by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, citing Swink (2003), to consume 19.3 kilograms of fish during that stage.
What anatomy makes this possible?
- Oral disk: a large, circular suction mouth rather than jaws.
- Disk teeth: keratinous, horny structures that anchor in the fish’s flesh. They are continually replaced during the parasitic stage.
- Toothed tongue: hard plates on the tongue do the cutting and rasping.
- Salivary anticoagulants: compounds that delay clotting at the wound.
The disk holds the lamprey in place; the tongue makes the hole. Confusing those jobs leads to the misleading idea that the outer teeth alone “saw” through the fish.

Do lampreys suck blood?
Sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) are the classic blood-feeding example. They also take tissue fluids, and the exact diet differs among species. “Parasitic lamprey” or a species name is therefore more precise than treating all lampreys as identical blood feeders.
Do lampreys kill the fish they feed on?
Not always. The outcome depends on the lamprey species, the host and the damage caused by the attachment.

| Lamprey example | Feeding emphasis | Typical host outcome | Parasitic-stage duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Lakes sea lamprey | Blood, body fluids and tissue | Can inflict lethal damage and is highly destructive to large fish populations | About 12–18 months |
| Pacific lamprey | Parasitic feeding on fish fluids and tissue | U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says hosts usually survive and the lamprey commonly releases them | Not stated in the cited material |
| Other lamprey species | Some rely more heavily on flesh or tissue than on blood | Varies by species and host | Varies by species |
The Great Lakes experience should not be generalized to every lamprey. Sea lampreys can weaken or kill hosts, whereas Pacific lampreys commonly leave their hosts alive.
What happens before parasitic feeding?
Lampreys do not spend their entire lives attached to fish. Their larval stage is blind and toothless. Larvae live in sediment and filter-feed on small particles and microorganisms, so the suction-disk-and-tongue mechanism applies to the parasitic stage, not to larvae.

Why the attachment can be so damaging
- The suction seal keeps the mouth pressed tightly against the host.
- Embedded disk teeth prevent the fish from easily dislodging the lamprey.
- The tongue removes scales and tissue, leaving an open wound.
- Anticoagulant saliva prolongs fluid loss after the wound is made.
- A lamprey may remain attached and feed repeatedly during its parasitic period.
Damage is therefore more than simple blood removal: the wound itself, continuing fluid loss and secondary infection risks can impair a fish, and heavily parasitized fish may die.

What part of a lamprey cuts the fish?
Hard plates on the central tongue rasp through scales, skin and underlying tissue; the surrounding disk teeth mainly provide grip.
Are lamprey larvae able to feed on fish?
No. Larvae are blind and toothless filter feeders. The fish-feeding mechanism develops for the later parasitic stage.
