Flying fish cannot fly like birds. They launch from the sea and glide above the surface on enlarged fins. A forked tail may keep beating against the water for extra thrust before the fish settles back into the ocean. “Flying fish” is therefore a common name for a group of exceptionally capable gliding fish, not evidence of powered flight.
How flying fish get airborne
A flying fish first accelerates underwater, then angles upward and breaks through the surface. Once clear of the water, it spreads its enlarged fins into rigid lifting surfaces. The fins do not flap: they function more like the wings of a glider.
- Build speed: the fish swims rapidly below the surface.
- Launch: it points upward and bursts out of the water.
- Spread the fins: enlarged pectoral fins provide the main gliding area.
- Taxi with the tail: the longer lower lobe of the forked tail can beat against the surface while the body is airborne, giving repeated boosts.
- Land: the fish eventually loses speed or descends back into the sea.
This combination of an underwater launch, rigid fins and occasional surface contact is why observers can mistake a glide for flight. NOAA educator Brian Jones described the behavior as fish that “glide through the air after launching themselves from the water.”
Do flying fish flap their fins?
No. Their pectoral fins stay extended as wings during the glide rather than beating like a bird’s wings. The lower tail lobe is the part that can continue moving, and it does so against the water’s surface, not by flapping in open air. This surface “taxiing” can provide several successive pushes during one airborne run.

Two-wing and four-wing flying fish
All flying fishes belong to the marine family Exocoetidae. Their body is streamlined, their fins lack spines, and their caudal fin is deeply forked with a noticeably longer lower lobe. The main difference between the two familiar body plans is which fins are enlarged.
| Type | Fin configuration | Glide characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Two-wing flying fish | Large pectoral fins; pelvic fins are not enlarged into a second wing pair | Uses the pectoral fins as the primary gliding surfaces; tail taxiing can add thrust |
| Four-wing flying fish | Large pectoral fins plus enlarged pelvic fins | Has additional lifting surface from the pelvic fins; distance still varies by species, wind and launch |
The names describe fin arrangement, not two fixed performance categories. A four-wing fish is not guaranteed to travel farther than every two-wing species, and published maximum distances should not be treated as a universal species limit.

How far and how fast can a flying fish glide?
Reports differ because they involve different species, launch speeds, wind conditions and definitions of a “flight.” Some measurements include repeated tail-powered surface taxiing, while others emphasize the uninterrupted airborne portion.
| Reported performance | Qualification |
|---|---|
| More than 600 feet in one burst | Reported in a 2021 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration educational transcript |
| About 200–300 metres | Range described by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for the family |
| Up to 400 metres | Australian Museum account describing ideal wind conditions |
| About 36 km/h in water and as much as 72 km/h in air for some species | Australian Museum species account; these are species-specific figures, not a family-wide constant |
In practical terms, a flying fish may travel hundreds of metres before returning to the sea, but there is no single distance or speed that applies to every member of Exocoetidae. Wind direction, wave state, body size, the initial underwater sprint and whether tail taxiing is counted all matter.

Why do flying fish leave the water?
The main explanation is escape. In the open ocean, a fast predator can approach from almost any direction and there are few nearby hiding places. Launching and gliding lets a flying fish put distance between itself and a pursuer quickly, sometimes moving over the surface faster than it could by swimming alone.
Gliding can also support rapid travel across the surface environment. It is not a recreational behavior or a search for land; the fish remains a marine animal and normally returns to the water.

Where flying fish live and what they eat
Flying fishes are surface-associated marine fish found mainly in warm tropical seas, with some species reaching temperate waters. They spend most of their lives in the open ocean rather than around reefs or shorelines. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute account describes roughly nine genera and about 60 species, although classification and species counts can change as scientists revise groups.
Most feed on planktonic organisms. Their streamlined shape and broad fins are adaptations for a life in open water, where sudden acceleration and an effective escape route can be more valuable than maneuvering through dense cover.

Did flying fish evolve from gliding ancestors?
Fossil research reported by the Smithsonian has suggested a possible sequence in flying-fish relatives: changes to the skull, followed by tail adaptations that improved launching, then the development of winglike fins, and later reduced scales that may have lowered aerodynamic drag.
This is a reconstruction from fossil evidence, not a complete, documented step-by-step history for every living species. It indicates how separate changes could have accumulated to turn a fast-swimming fish into an efficient launcher and glider.
Are flying fish suitable as pets?
No. Flying fishes are specialized open-ocean animals that need space to accelerate, a marine environment and conditions that home aquariums cannot realistically reproduce. NOAA educational material notes that they are not well suited to aquarium life. Their dramatic glides are best observed in the wild or through responsible scientific and educational media, not treated as a cue to buy a fish or aquarium product.
What “flying” means in the name
In ordinary language, “fly” means to move through the air. In biological terms, powered flight requires repeated wing strokes that generate thrust. Flying fish do not do that. “Glide,” “launch” and “taxi” are the more precise words: the fish powers itself out of the water, holds its fins steady, and may use its tail against the surface for additional boosts.

Flying fish do not truly fly: they launch at high speed, glide on enlarged fins and sometimes taxi on the water with the lower tail lobe. Depending on species and conditions, a glide can cover hundreds of metres, making these open-ocean fish among nature’s most impressive aquatic escape artists.
