Tuna is not a complete duck diet and should never replace commercial waterfowl feed. Serve only unseasoned fish in tiny pieces, provide clean drinking water, and avoid making tuna a routine food—especially for wild ducks.
Why ducks can eat fish
Ducks are omnivores. Wild ducks may eat varied plant and animal foods, including small fish. That does not make every fish product suitable, nor does it make tuna nutritionally complete for a domestic duck.
Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory says duck food must supply all nutrients required for “maintenance, growth and reproduction.” For pet and backyard ducks, a commercially formulated waterfowl ration is therefore the nutritional foundation. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guidance likewise says a commercially designed duck food is the best choice for domestic ducks.
VetVerified lists plain, unseasoned, cooked tuna or salmon as a possible duck food. This is general veterinary-reviewed treat guidance, not a validated tuna dose or feeding schedule for ducks.

How to prepare tuna safely
- Cook it thoroughly. Offer fully cooked fish, not raw tuna.
- Keep it plain. Do not add salt, oil, butter, sauces, spices or seasoning.
- Remove bones. Flake the fish and check carefully for hard pieces. University of Florida IFAS warns that large fish bones can puncture a bird’s pouch or stomach or lodge in the throat.
- Make bite-sized pieces. Small flakes reduce choking risk; Tufts Wildlife Clinic also recommends bite-sized food for birds.
- Serve a small amount only. No authoritative duck-specific tuna serving size or maximum frequency has been established, so do not apply human canned-tuna advice as a duck dose.
- Provide water. Ducks need fresh, clean water at all times. They also use water while eating, which helps reduce choking risk.
- Remove leftovers promptly. Wet food can spoil or mold. Cornell warns that moist feed left in troughs can become moldy.
Is canned tuna safe for ducks?
Canned tuna is not automatically safe. Many products contain added salt, oil, flavorings or sauces, and the evidence reviewed here does not establish a duck-specific safe salt limit. If canned tuna is used at all, choose only a plain product with no seasoning, drain it well, inspect it for bones and offer a tiny quantity. Freshly cooked plain tuna is easier to control.
Do not feed tuna salad, spicy tuna, seasoned leftovers, tuna packed in sauce or products containing onion, garlic or other problematic ingredients. Discard any fish that smells spoiled or has been left warm.

How much tuna can a duck have?
There is no published duck-specific tuna mercury threshold, exact serving size or maximum frequency in the available veterinary and extension guidance. The safest practical rule is to treat tuna as a rare, small supplement rather than a scheduled part of the diet. Stop if the duck develops digestive upset, refuses its normal feed or shows choking or breathing difficulty; seek an avian veterinarian promptly for serious symptoms.
Do not use tuna to replace pellets, crumble, greens or another balanced ration. Treat foods should remain a minor addition so the duck continues eating nutritionally complete feed.

What domestic ducks should eat instead
Choose a complete feed labeled for waterfowl and the duck’s life stage. The appropriate formula matters more than choosing a particular treat.
| Duck or stage | Guidance supported by veterinary sources |
|---|---|
| Drakes and non-laying ducks | UC Davis lists approximately 12–14% protein for these groups. |
| Laying ducks | UC Davis lists approximately 16–17% protein for laying ducks. |
| Waterfowl older than 12 weeks | The MSD Veterinary Manual’s September 2025 review recommends maintenance diets with approximately 14–17% protein and 3–6% fat, plus adequate vitamins and minerals. |
Examples named by the cited guidance include Mazuri Waterfowl Maintenance pellets, Mazuri Waterfowl Layer pellets and Purina Duck Feed Pellets. Check the current label for species, life stage, nutrient formulation, pellet size and storage instructions; product prices and availability vary.

Choosing a complete feed
- Match maintenance, grower or layer formulation to the duck’s stage and purpose.
- Confirm the product is labeled for waterfowl rather than relying on a generic poultry feed.
- Check protein, fat, vitamin and mineral guarantees on the current package.
- Use a pellet size the duck can swallow comfortably.
- Store feed dry and hygienically, and keep drinking water clean.
Can wild ducks eat tuna?
Do not make tuna—or any human food—a routine offering to wild ducks. Ducks Unlimited Canada says it does not recommend feeding waterfowl except where authorized under a federal permit. USDA APHIS advises avoiding wildlife feeding because it can contribute to malnutrition, disease transmission and conflicts with people. Feeding can also encourage dependence and crowding. Local parks and wildlife authorities may prohibit feeding altogether.
If you encounter a wild duck that appears injured or ill, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than trying to supplement it with tuna.

Fish and treats: safer boundaries
Small, plain, cooked fish can fit the same occasional-treat category as tuna, but fish should never displace a complete ration. Avoid raw fish, bones, salty or seasoned products, spoiled food and large chunks. Introduce any new treat cautiously and observe the flock for digestive or behavioral changes.
Quick safety checklist
- Plain and fully cooked
- Boneless and flaked into tiny pieces
- No salt, oil, sauce or spices
- Small, occasional treat only
- Complete waterfowl feed remains the staple
- Fresh, clean drinking water available
- Leftovers removed before they spoil
When to avoid tuna entirely
Skip tuna if the product is seasoned, oily, salty, raw, spoiled or difficult to inspect for bones. Avoid offering it to a duck that is already ill unless an avian veterinarian specifically recommends it. A veterinarian can tailor nutrition for ducks with reproductive, liver, kidney or digestive conditions.
