Cavefish and true minnows are not close relatives. The cavefish discussed here are cave-adapted forms of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, a characid. True minnows belong mainly to the family Leuciscidae. Cave and surface Astyanax, however, are closely related forms within the same species complex and readily interbreed. Their comparison shows how evolution can repeatedly reduce some structures while enlarging or reorganizing others.

What “cavefish” and “minnow” mean

Cavefish: the cave form of Astyanax mexicanus

In this article, “cavefish” means the blind, lightly pigmented or depigmented cave morphs of Astyanax mexicanus. Surface populations of the same species are eyed and normally pigmented. The two forms can look dramatically different despite their recent shared ancestry.

True minnow: a member of Leuciscidae

“Minnow” is often used casually for any small fish. In the taxonomic sense used by fisheries guides, a true minnow is a member of Leuciscidae. Leuciscids include familiar freshwater fishes such as dace, shiners and many fishes called minnows. Tetras such as Astyanax are in Characidae, not Leuciscidae.

Are cavefish and minnows related?

The close relationship is between cave and surface Astyanax

Cave and surface Astyanax are alternative forms within one closely related species complex. They retain compatible reproductive systems and readily produce hybrids. This makes them an unusually direct example of common ancestry followed by strong ecological and developmental divergence.

Astyanax and true minnows share only a distant fish ancestry

Both are small freshwater, ray-finned teleosts, but that broad body plan does not make them close family relatives. Characids and leuciscids are separate lineages. A cave tetra may occupy a role that resembles a small minnow in a stream or cave, yet that resemblance is ecological analogy rather than evidence that one evolved from the other.

Did cavefish evolve once?

Multiple cave origins are supported

Evidence does not fit a single, simple transition in which every cave population descends from one founding cave stock. A population-genetic study sampling 11 cave and 10 surface populations found that cave populations were more differentiated from one another, had lower genetic diversity, and retained limited gene flow from surface populations.

A later genomic analysis found strong evidence of parallel evolution in independent cave lineages and proposed as many as four independent cave invasions in the sampled regions. The exact number depends on the populations and genomic model, so it should not be treated as a count for every cave population worldwide.

Similar cave traits can arise repeatedly

At least 30 cave populations were discussed in William R. Jeffery’s 2009 review. Their recurring similarities are best understood as parallel or convergent evolution under comparable darkness, food scarcity and other cave pressures. Similar adult features do not prove that all populations inherited them from one recent cave ancestor.

Gene flow keeps the history from being a simple split

Some cave groups continue to exchange genes with nearby surface fish. The Micos populations, for example, show more overlap with surface populations in head and premaxillary shape than the more divergent Sierra de El Abra populations in a study published in 2024 in the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society (the journal’s 2025 volume). Cave evolution therefore combines isolation, repeated colonization and, in some places, ongoing hybridization.

What changed in a cavefish’s body?

Eyes and body pigment

Surface Astyanax have large functional eyes and three major pigment-cell types. Cave forms reduce the eyes to vestiges or lose them externally, and body pigmentation is greatly reduced or absent.

Feeding structures

Cavefish can develop larger jaws and more extensive feeding structures than surface fish. Independent cave lineages repeatedly show an increased maxillary tooth count. The 2024 study also found a shorter ascending process of the premaxillary bone, with the degree of change varying among regions.

Taste and smell

Many cave populations have more taste buds and altered olfactory or feeding-related anatomy. These changes can improve food detection when vision is unavailable, but the precise combination differs among populations.

Lateral-line and other sensory structures

Cranial neuromasts—sensory organs associated with the lateral-line system—can be enlarged. The same comparative study found repeated reductions in lateral-line scale count, another example of a trait changing in parallel across separate cave lineages.

Energy storage

Cavefish commonly carry larger fat reserves. In an environment where meals may be unpredictable, storing energy can be advantageous, although the size of the effect varies with population and conditions.

Scales, fins and ribs

Some cave populations have smaller scales, fewer anal-fin rays and one or two fewer rib-bearing thoracic vertebrae than surface populations. These are population-level tendencies, not a single anatomical recipe shared identically by every cavefish.

Head shape varies by region

Head and premaxillary shape form a geographic gradient rather than a universal cavefish shape. Sierra de El Abra populations are generally the most divergent from surface fish in the cited analysis, while Micos fish show greater overlap where surface–cave hybridization occurs.

How eye and pigment loss develop

Eye loss begins after the eye starts forming

Cavefish embryos initiate an eye primordium. Enhanced programmed cell death in the lens then prevents normal growth of other optic tissues, including the retina. Eye loss is therefore not simply a failure to begin making an eye; it is a developmental process that redirects or removes tissue after initiation.

Depigmentation involves melanin production

Reviews link the reduced pigmentation of many cavefish to a hypomorphic oca2 mutation that interferes with handling melanin precursors inside melanosomes. Developmental changes such as these help explain how similar adult forms can evolve through partly shared and partly independent genetic routes.

Cavefish and true minnows compared

Feature Astyanax cavefish True minnows (Leuciscidae) What the comparison means
Family Characidae (a tetra) Leuciscidae Separate families; not close relatives
Geographic context Cave and surface populations of the Mexican tetra, especially in Mexico Freshwater fishes distributed across the Northern Hemisphere and other regions depending on the genus Ranges overlap only in the broad sense of freshwater habitats
Eyes and pigment Eyes and melanin greatly reduced or absent in cave morphs Typical minnow species generally retain functional eyes and ordinary pigmentation The cavefish condition is a specialized cave adaptation, not a minnow hallmark
Jaws and teeth Jaw enlargement and repeated increases in maxillary tooth count in cave lineages Leuciscid jaws are described as toothless in standard field-guide diagnoses Similar feeding roles do not imply homologous specializations
Scales Some populations have smaller scales and fewer lateral-line scales Smooth-edged cycloid scales and an unscaled head are characteristic Scale pattern can help distinguish the groups
Fins Some cave populations show reduced anal-fin ray counts No adipose fin and characteristic fin-ray counts are typical diagnostic features Fin characters support identification, but counts vary by species
Developmental mechanism Lens apoptosis contributes to eye reduction; oca2-related melanin processing contributes to depigmentation No equivalent cave-loss mechanism defines true minnows as a family The developmental story is specific to cave-adapted Astyanax

How to interpret the evolutionary connection

  • Homology: Cave and surface Astyanax share structures because they inherited them from a recent common ancestor.
  • Parallel evolution: Separate cave lineages repeatedly evolved features such as additional maxillary teeth or fewer lateral-line scales.
  • Ecological analogy: A cavefish and a small minnow may occupy similar freshwater niches while belonging to different families.

The most accurate answer to “Is a cavefish just a minnow that lost its eyes?” is no. It is a cave-adapted tetra whose eye and pigment reduction evolved within Astyanax, alongside constructive changes in feeding, sensory and energy-storage systems. True minnows provide a useful visual or ecological comparison, not the cavefish’s direct ancestry.
