Yes—if by “true penguin” you mean the bird that originally carried the name. That animal was the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis), a now-extinct North Atlantic seabird. Modern penguins are real penguins scientifically, but they belong to a different family and inherited the name because they evolved a remarkably similar black-and-white, flightless, swimming lifestyle.
The original “penguin” was the Great Auk
The Great Auk was the first bird called a penguin. It lived around the North Atlantic and belonged to the auk family, Alcidae—the same broader family that includes puffins, murres and other auks. Its scientific name was Pinguinus impennis.
The phrase “true penguin” is not a formal taxonomic category. It is a useful way to describe the original bearer of the name, rather than a separate scientific group.
Modern penguins belong to a different family
Living penguins are members of the family Spheniscidae and the order Sphenisciformes. BirdLife International’s cited list contains 18 living penguin species. They are flightless aquatic birds found almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.

So modern penguins are not impostors or taxonomically invalid. In science, “penguin” correctly refers to Spheniscidae. The historical puzzle is that the name was first used for an entirely different bird.
Great Auks and modern penguins look alike for a surprising reason
The Great Auk and modern penguins were not close relatives. Their similarities arose through similar adaptation to life in the water, a process known as convergent evolution.
| Feature | Great Auk | Modern penguins |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Alcidae | Spheniscidae |
| Range | North Atlantic | Almost exclusively the Southern Hemisphere |
| Flight | Flightless | Flightless |
| Status | Extinct; the last live bird was reported in 1852 | Living family with 18 species on BirdLife’s cited list |
| Name history | The original bird called “penguin” | Inherited the name because of resemblance and similar habits |
Both groups developed compact, streamlined bodies and wings adapted for swimming rather than flying. That shared body plan can make them look related even when their evolutionary histories are separate.

Why did the name “penguin” move to another bird?
The name was used for the Great Auk as early as the 16th century. Later, sailors and explorers applied it to unrelated birds in the southern oceans that also were black and white, flightless and highly adapted to swimming. The visual and behavioral resemblance made the transfer understandable, even though the birds were not close relatives.
The word’s deeper origin is uncertain. One proposed explanation connects it with the Welsh words pen and gwyn, meaning “white head.” Another links it with Spanish pingüino and the bird’s fat. These remain competing explanations, not a settled etymology.
What happened to the Great Auk?
Great Auks bred in scattered North Atlantic colonies and were especially vulnerable when they came ashore to reproduce. People could kill them easily on land, and the birds were exploited for several products.

The final confirmed breeding pair
In 1844, the last known breeding pair was killed on Eldey Island off Iceland. This date refers specifically to the final confirmed pair, not necessarily the final individual ever seen.
The last reported live bird
The last live Great Auk was reported in 1852 off Newfoundland. Thus, 1844 and 1852 are not contradictory: one records the last known pair at a breeding site, while the other records the last reported living bird.

So are “true penguins” extinct?
If “true penguin” means the original bird to receive the name, yes: the Great Auk is extinct. If it means the scientifically recognized penguin group, no: modern penguins in Spheniscidae are living, genuine penguins.
The most accurate explanation is therefore historical rather than judgmental. The original penguin disappeared, but its name survived after being transferred to a different family of southern seabirds that evolved a similar way of life.
