Messi, the seven-year-old border collie who played Snoop in Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning film Anatomy of a Fall, attended the 2024 Academy Awards nominees luncheon. His appearance was a genuine event visit, separate from the later Oscars telecast clip that showed him apparently clapping.

At the 2024 Oscars, the Associated Press described Messi as seven years old. His performance attracted unusual attention for a canine actor, helping make him one of the film’s most recognizable awards-season figures.
What does the luncheon video show?
The video shows Messi at the 2024 Academy Awards nominees luncheon, an official pre-ceremony gathering for nominees and guests. It is not footage from the televised awards ceremony. Messi’s presence at the luncheon gave photographers and attendees a chance to see the dog who played Snoop alongside the film’s human cast and creative team.

Did Messi attend the Oscars ceremony?
AP later reported that Messi appeared at the Oscars in a prominent aisle seat. That appearance should not be confused with the luncheon, and available reporting does not establish that he stayed in the theater for the entire ceremony; he may have left before the show ended.
Was the Oscars clapping clip real?
The famous cutaway of Messi apparently clapping was produced for the broadcast rather than captured as an uninterrupted, spontaneous reaction during the ceremony. AP photographer Chris Pizzello said cameras filmed Messi before the show, and a crew member helped create the shot with a human hand and fake paws.
Rank #2
That production detail does not erase Messi’s appearance at the event. It means the televised moment was a staged bit assembled from pre-filmed footage and practical assistance. Host Jimmy Kimmel played along, saying, “Even though he’s a dog, he may have given the performance of a year in Anatomy of a Fall.”
