Announced by the Orangutan Foundation on May 17, 2024, the record was the first time the foundation’s camera-trap work in the park had captured a mother with two offspring.
What did the rare Borneo leopard footage show?
The footage shows an adult female Bornean clouded leopard accompanied by two young cubs. It is a family record rather than an image of a solitary cat, providing direct evidence that the species is reproducing in this part of the park.
The Orangutan Foundation described the sighting as the first mother-with-two-offspring record from its camera-trap work in Tanjung Puting. The Wildlife Society reported the footage on April 3, 2026, calling the sight hopeful for an endangered species.
Where were the mother and cubs filmed?
The wildlife trail cameras were operating in Tanjung Puting National Park in southwest Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. The park protects extensive tropical forest and is best known internationally for its orangutan conservation, but its camera-trap surveys also document other forest species, including clouded leopards.

The 2024 announcement refers to the park’s camera-trap work, not to a public sighting by visitors. Keeping the exact location of a breeding family undisclosed can help reduce disturbance to animals that are rarely seen.
Which species appears in the recording?
The cats are Bornean clouded leopards, Neofelis diardi borneensis, the Bornean subspecies of the Sunda clouded leopard. They are forest-dependent predators that can hunt in trees and on the ground. Orangutan Foundation Research Manager Anxious Yoga Perdana said: “The clouded leopard is an arboreal species and excellent hunter on the ground that plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem.”

Why is seeing a mother with two cubs important?
It confirms reproduction in the park
A family group with dependent young is stronger evidence of successful breeding than a single passing animal. The Orangutan Foundation said the presence of offspring indicates that Tanjung Puting provides suitable habitat and that the local population is healthy and actively breeding.

It is an unusually difficult species to observe
Bornean clouded leopards are elusive, forest-dwelling cats. Their low visibility makes observations of mothers with young especially uncommon. A two-cub record therefore adds information that an isolated detection cannot provide about breeding and habitat use.

Conservation depends on animals surviving long enough to reproduce and on young reaching independence. The family footage captures one step in that process. It does not establish the size of the park’s population or guarantee that the cubs will survive, but it demonstrates that reproduction is occurring.
How do camera traps capture endangered wildlife?
Camera traps, also called wildlife trail cameras, are motion- or heat-triggered units placed along animal paths and other likely travel routes. They can work day and night without a researcher standing nearby, reducing the chance that an unusually shy animal will avoid the observation point.

Camera-trap evidence is valuable because it can reveal animals that are nocturnal, solitary or difficult to follow through dense forest. It also has limits: one sequence cannot provide a full census, prove that every cub will mature or by itself measure long-term population trends.
Are Bornean clouded leopards endangered?
Yes. The Orangutan Foundation and The Wildlife Society identify the Bornean clouded leopard as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The cats depend on intact forest, so the loss and fragmentation of habitat are central threats.
Deforestation and habitat loss
The Orangutan Foundation says deforestation has likely reduced the population to less than one-third of its former level in recent years. That statement describes a decline relative to the species’ earlier level; it is not a global headcount.

Low recruitment
The species is rarely seen and has difficulty producing and raising enough young to maintain recruitment. Protecting a forest therefore means more than retaining adult animals: it must preserve the cover, prey base and connected habitat that females need to raise cubs.
Why protected areas matter
Tanjung Puting’s value in this story is both refuge and monitoring site. Forest protection in and around the park can give breeding animals space while camera-trap surveys show whether wildlife continues to use that habitat.
