How Facial Recognition Helps Researchers Track Endangered Primates

Facial recognition can make primate monitoring faster and more consistent, but results depend on species, data and field conditions—and the software is a research aid, not a standalone conservation solution.

Facial-recognition software can identify individual primates in photographs and video, helping researchers follow animals, measure behavior and build population records with less manual labeling. It does not protect a species by itself: conservation benefits depend on the wider monitoring, habitat-protection and enforcement work that uses those records.

What primate facial-recognition software actually does

A recognition system usually performs several separate jobs:

  • Detection: locating a face or animal in a photograph or video frame.
  • Tracking: following that animal across successive frames.
  • Recognition: assigning a detected face to a known individual.
  • Verification: testing whether two images show the same individual.
  • Open-set re-identification: retrieving or verifying an individual who was not included among the training labels.

Keeping these tasks distinct matters. A model can detect and track animals well while still making unreliable identity assignments, especially when faces are partly hidden, blurred by movement or recorded in unfamiliar conditions.

PrimNet and the PrimID mobile app

Michigan State University described PrimNet, with the Android app PrimID, as a tool into which a field researcher can submit a golden-monkey photograph. The app returns an identity match or, when an exact match is unavailable, a shortlist of up to five candidate individuals. Michigan State reported matches above 90% “in many cases” and 93.75% accuracy for lemurs on its reported evaluation. Those figures are study results, not a guarantee for every species, camera or wild population.

The same report proposed using identification to give investigators clues about where a captured great ape might have originated. That is a possible investigative aid, not evidence that PrimID has reduced trafficking.

Recognition from long-term video

The University of Oxford’s wild-chimpanzee system combined face detection, within-video tracking and identity recognition. Its 2019 study used a 14-year dataset containing 10 million face images of 23 chimpanzees and more than 50 hours of footage. The project reported 92.5% identity-recognition accuracy and 96.2% sex-recognition accuracy under its evaluation conditions.

Fraunhofer IDMT’s SAISBECO project took a broader audiovisual-monitoring approach, combining searches through recordings with great-ape species and individual identification to support ecological, demographic and population studies.

Why open-set recognition is important in the wild

Many conventional classifiers assume that every possible individual is represented by a training label. Real monitoring does not work that way: a camera may record a newcomer, a juvenile or an animal from a neighboring group.

Oxford’s ChimpUFE project learns a face representation from unlabelled chimpanzee footage and tests retrieval and verification on held-out identities and separate datasets. Its project page says: “Our method demonstrates strong open-set re-identification performance, surpassing supervised baselines on challenging benchmarks such as Bossou, despite utilising no labelled data during training.” This is a research approach, not proof of a universally deployable conservation service.

How the systems support conservation research

Long-term individual records

Automatic identity suggestions can reduce the time spent labeling every frame. Researchers can then assemble histories of sightings, births, injuries, associations and disappearances over months or years.

Behavior and social-network analysis

Consistent identities allow teams to quantify grooming, aggression, mating, travel and group membership. Those records can reveal social-network changes that are difficult to measure from occasional visits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Population and demographic monitoring

Detection, tracking and recognition together can turn repeated camera-trap or video observations into estimates of presence, survival, dispersal and demographic change. Fraunhofer’s SAISBECO and Oxford’s video work illustrate this pipeline, while PriMAT focuses heavily on the detection-and-tracking stage needed before identity analysis.

Possible support for trafficking investigations

Michigan State University suggested that matching a confiscated great ape to images from a known region could provide investigators with a lead about its origin. Such a match would need corroboration from veterinary, geographic, genetic and investigative evidence. The proposed use should not be described as a demonstrated reduction in trafficking.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Field conditions that can reduce reliability

Wild footage contains background clutter, changing light, motion blur, partial views and overlapping animals. PriMAT reports these challenges and found that some great-ape detections were difficult in PanAf footage with different appearance and lower camera resolution; fine-tuning on the target domain improved detection. That improvement concerns detection, not a universal guarantee of identity accuracy.

ChimpUFE’s results also differ among evaluation datasets, including a held-out wild Bossou group and a captive dataset. Transfer performance therefore has to be reported with the population and domain used for testing.

What a responsible monitoring project needs

  1. A defined population: document the species, study area, groups and individuals represented in the data.
  2. Representative imagery: include different seasons, lighting, poses, distances, ages and degrees of occlusion.
  3. Separate evaluation data: test on animals, locations or recording sessions withheld from training where possible.
  4. Human review: treat candidate lists and similarity scores as decision support, with an expert checking uncertain matches.
  5. Uncertainty records: retain confidence, image quality and reasons for rejecting a match rather than forcing every frame into an identity.
  6. Privacy and security controls: protect sensitive nest, den and location data that could expose endangered animals or aid poachers.
  7. End-to-end validation: measure whether the complete detection-to-tracking-to-recognition workflow improves the actual ecological question, not just one model metric.

Can a wildlife camera trap feed these systems?

Yes, camera traps are a plausible, non-invasive way to gather the photographs and video used by primate-monitoring research. Oxford’s ChimpUFE work describes camera traps as a scalable monitoring approach, and PriMAT evaluates footage with the practical variation found in the wild. Compatibility is not automatic, however: resolution, frame rate, infrared illumination, placement and species-specific facial visibility all affect the usable data. No particular retail camera is established by these studies as universally compatible.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Current projects demonstrate that software can automate parts of individual identification and tracking for several primate species. They support better behavioral, social and population records, and may provide leads for investigations. The reported accuracies are conditional study results, not field-wide guarantees. None of the cited work demonstrates that facial recognition alone increases a threatened population, prevents trafficking or otherwise produces a direct population-level conservation outcome.
