A water-pipe feeder can store and release dry kibble with a motor-driven rotor. The documented design uses a vertical pipe reservoir, a 45-degree joiner, rubber fins between acrylic discs, a geared DC motor, and a NodeMCU controller. It can accept scheduled or phone-triggered commands, but portion accuracy, food-contact safety, jams, and internet availability must be solved by the builder.
How the water-pipe feeder works
The pipe serves as both the food reservoir and the upper chute. Its lower end enters a 45-degree joiner that turns kibble toward a dispensing rotor. Rubber fins mounted between acrylic discs form pockets; when the geared motor turns, a pocket carries kibble to the outlet and drops it into the bowl.
Two pipe holders support the vertical reservoir on a panel. The NodeMCU, relay, motor wiring, and power hardware sit in a separate acrylic enclosure rather than in the food path. In the documented connected version, a phone sends a timer or manual-feed command through a public server, so the feeder is designed to remain connected to the internet.

Choose the pipe before cutting
Match diameter to kibble
Use the smallest diameter that lets the actual kibble fall freely. Very small pieces may pass through a 30 mm pipe, while larger or irregular pieces may need 60 mm or 90 mm. The project does not provide a universal portion chart, so diameter alone cannot predict how many grams one rotor cycle will release.

Set length for capacity and access
Increasing pipe length increases storage capacity, but a tall, full tube puts more load on the rotor and makes cleaning harder. Leave enough clearance to remove the pipe, inspect the joiner, and reach the bowl without tipping the stand. Position the outlet above the bowl so falling kibble does not strike the rim and bounce onto the floor.
Check material documentation
Plumbing use does not automatically prove that a pipe is suitable for food contact. Select products with documented intended-use information, smooth accessible surfaces, and removable sections that can be washed and dried. FDA guidance and 21 CFR §507.22 require animal-food equipment to be adequately cleanable, made of nontoxic materials, and maintained to prevent contamination.
Build the mechanical dispenser
- Mount the reservoir. Fasten two holders to a rigid support panel and secure the pipe vertically. Keep the lower end aligned with the 45-degree joiner.
- Fit the joiner. Connect the lower pipe to the joiner so kibble has a smooth, unobstructed path toward the rotor. Remove sharp edges, exposed threads, and ledges that could trap food.
- Make the rotor. Sandwich the specified rubber fins between acrylic discs. Space the fins evenly enough to form repeatable pockets, and reinforce the discs if they bend under a full load.
- Couple the motor. Align the 6 mm coupling with the geared motor and rotor. The shaft must run concentrically; misalignment increases friction and can cause stalls.
- Provide a serviceable outlet. Make the rotor and joiner removable without dismantling the entire stand. A removable food path is easier to inspect after a jam and safer to sanitize.
Wire the controller without guessing at power ratings
The NodeMCU controls the relay, and the relay switches the geared motor. Include the listed 1N4007 diode across the motor circuit as appropriate for the relay arrangement, and use the screw terminal and DC socket for secure connections. Keep low-voltage logic wiring separated from the motor wiring and protect every connection from kibble dust and moisture.

Do not connect the listed 9 V, 1 A adapter directly to a motor specified as 12 V without confirming the motor’s operating range and the project’s actual wiring. Check the adapter’s current capacity, the relay contact rating, polarity, and the NodeMCU supply requirements. Use a correctly rated regulated supply or separate supplies where the final circuit requires them; the parts list alone does not establish a safe electrical combination.
Configure scheduling and remote control
The original user experience is a phone that sets timers or triggers a feed while a public server relays commands. Continuous internet access is part of that design. The Hackster documentation was published in 2017, so its firmware, server endpoint, credentials, and app path may require replacement or may no longer function. Confirm those dependencies before relying on remote schedules.
For a dependable household appliance, add an operating mode that can feed locally when the network or cloud service is unavailable. Whether that is implemented as a local timer, a physical schedule, or another controller is a design choice; it should be tested independently of the remote path.

Calibrate portions with your own kibble
Rotor geometry, pipe diameter, kibble shape, moisture, and fill level all affect the dose. No validated accuracy result is published for this exact feeder, so treat every timer value as uncalibrated until measured.
- Fill the reservoir with the food you actually intend to use.
- Run one dispense cycle into a dry container.
- Weigh the result, or measure its volume consistently, and record the value.
- Repeat at least 10 cycles at the beginning, middle, and near-empty levels of the reservoir.
- Calculate the average and note the smallest and largest releases. Adjust motor run time, rotor pocket size, or fin spacing only after recording the change.
- Test starts and stops repeatedly. Watch for bridging above the rotor, fins that drag on the joiner, and kibble that remains trapped in corners.
A related PVC auger design warns that augers can jam and recommends testing with real pet food while adjusting speed and geometry. That is a reason to inspect this rotor repeatedly, not evidence of a measured failure rate for the water-pipe design.

Food safety, cleaning, and maintenance
- Keep lubricants, solder flux, adhesives, primer, and PVC cement out of the food path unless the manufacturer specifically documents suitability for the intended contact and curing conditions.
- Design out dead legs, exposed threads, and inaccessible cavities where damp kibble can remain.
- Empty and dry the reservoir between cleaning cycles. Wash the pipe, joiner, rotor, and bowl separately from the electronics enclosure.
- Inspect the outlet and bowl for oily residue, mold, softened kibble, or fragments after every refill.
- Check holders, the coupling, relay terminals, and motor alignment periodically. A loose mount can change the dose or stop the rotor.
- Use only dry food that flows through the chute. Wet food requires a different, refrigerated and cleanable dispensing design.
Pet food itself must be safe to eat, made under sanitary conditions, and free of harmful substances. Food-contact components should therefore be selected and maintained as deliberately as the electronic parts.

Troubleshoot common failures
The motor runs but no food exits
Check for a bridge above the rotor, a fin rubbing the joiner, or a rotor pocket that is too shallow for the kibble. Empty the path, inspect alignment, and repeat calibration with a partial and a full reservoir.
The feeder releases too much or too little
Measure several cycles rather than changing the schedule after one test. Look for changing fill levels, mixed kibble sizes, slipping coupling, or fins that deform under load.
The motor stalls or the relay chatters
Disconnect power before clearing the mechanism. Verify that the supply voltage, current capacity, relay contacts, wiring polarity, and mechanical load match the selected motor. A 9 V adapter and a 12 V motor should not be treated as an automatically compatible pair.

A remote feed does not arrive
Test the controller’s network connection, server endpoint, credentials, and firmware compatibility. Until the remote path is proven, keep a manual feeding plan and do not leave an animal dependent on an untested schedule.
Is this feeder suitable for your pet?
This project is best treated as a dry-kibble engineering project, not a finished, certified appliance. It is a reasonable starting point if you can select appropriate food-contact materials, build a removable food path, verify the electrical supply, calibrate with your pet’s food, and provide a manual fallback. If you need guaranteed portions, wet-food handling, or unattended operation without internet and maintenance checks, a purpose-built feeder is the safer choice.
