The safest first meeting gives your dog room to observe, a way to retreat, and the choice not to greet. Ask visitors to stay calm, avoid staring or reaching, and let your dog decide whether to approach. If your dog seems uncomfortable, add distance and end the interaction.
Prepare the space before visitors arrive
Set up the room before opening the door so your dog is not trapped in a face-to-face greeting. Put away food, chews, and toys if they could create guarding pressure. Make sure your dog can retreat to a quiet room or another comfortable place.
A gate, crate, leash, or designated place can help manage access in some homes, but no single option suits every dog. Choose equipment with your home’s layout and your dog’s size and behavior in mind. A gate should be secure and free of hazards, and it does not replace supervision. Tell visitors how to behave
Before they come in, ask guests to move calmly and ignore your dog at first. They should avoid direct eye contact, reaching, leaning over, or making sudden movements. If your dog approaches, visitors can remain relaxed and let the dog set the pace. Ask guests to follow your instructions rather than calling the dog over or trying to pet them.

The AKC guidance on greeting an unfamiliar dog likewise advises asking the owner first and letting the dog choose whether to engage.
Let your dog observe from a comfortable distance
Begin far enough away that your dog can notice the visitor without being pressured to interact. A leash may help manage access when appropriate, but do not pull your dog toward the guest. Do not use food to lure a worried dog closer; that can bring the dog into contact before they are ready.

If your dog is comfortable, reward calm observation or choosing to disengage. A greeting is optional: remaining at a distance or staying in a separate room can be a successful outcome. The AKC advice on fear of strangers emphasizes giving dogs space and an opt-out. For dogs that jump during greetings, the AKC guide to managing jumping offers additional greeting-specific advice.
Watch for signs your dog needs space
Do not judge comfort only by whether your dog barks or lunges. Look at the whole dog and respond to signs of unease, which can include:

- Hiding, retreating, or trying to leave
- Stiff posture or sudden stiffening
- Yawning or lip licking
- Hard, fixed staring
- Barking, lunging, growling, or snapping
- A tucked tail
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s dog-bite prevention guidance also identifies signs such as a tucked tail, stiffening, and staring as possible indicators of fear or threat. If you see discomfort, calmly increase distance and stop the greeting.

Do not punish a growl or other warning signal, and do not insist that your dog accept petting. Treat withdrawal, growling, and similar behavior as information that your dog needs more space. Calmly separate the dog and visitor, using the retreat or barrier you prepared.

If your dog has bitten someone, shows escalating fear or aggression, or cannot remain comfortable even with distance, keep visitors separated from the dog and seek help from a qualified veterinary or behavior professional. The ASPCA’s guidance on dogs and babies recommends qualified professional help for behavior concerns in that context; a safe plan for visitors should be tailored to the individual dog.
