After a dog bite, get to safety, control bleeding with direct pressure, and wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water. Arrange prompt medical advice, then contact local health or animal-control authorities about reporting and rabies assessment. Severe injury or bleeding that will not stop needs emergency care.

What should you do right after a dog bite?

  1. Get away from the dog. Move to a safe place. If the dog remains a threat, do not try to catch or restrain it; contact emergency services or animal control as appropriate.
  2. Control bleeding. Press a clean, dry cloth firmly against the wound. Seek emergency care for uncontrolled bleeding, major tissue injury, or another serious injury.
  3. Wash the wound. Once bleeding is controlled, flush and wash it thoroughly with soap and running water. For a possible rabies exposure, the CDC and WHO recommend about 15 minutes of washing and flushing. Cleaning also helps reduce bacterial infection risk (CDC rabies prevention; WHO animal-bite guidance).
  4. Contact a healthcare professional promptly. Even a small-looking bite can need assessment for wound depth, infection risk, tetanus protection, antibiotics, wound closure, and rabies exposure.
  5. Ask local authorities what to do next. Contact your local health department or animal control about reporting, identifying the dog, and any observation or quarantine process. Do not wait to seek medical advice while trying to collect every record.

When does a dog bite need emergency care?

Go to an emergency department or contact emergency services for uncontrolled bleeding, major tissue injury, or a wound that needs immediate attention. Severe exposures—such as multiple wounds or bites to the head or neck—and bites involving a young child need immediate assessment.

Other possible rabies exposures need medical attention quickly, but not every exposure requires an immediate emergency-room visit if the wound itself does not need urgent care. The CDC makes this distinction in its Clinical Overview of Rabies. If you are unsure how urgent the wound is, contact a clinician or local health department for direction.

Do you need rabies shots after a dog bite?

Not every dog bite requires rabies shots. A clinician, working with public health officials when appropriate, assesses the exposure using the animal, bite circumstances, vaccination information, and local rabies epidemiology. A dog appearing healthy or an owner saying it is vaccinated does not by itself settle whether treatment is needed; do not make that decision on your own.

For someone who has not previously been vaccinated, CDC guidance describes rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) as wound washing, human rabies immune globulin, and rabies vaccine. The appropriate assessment and treatment schedule must come from qualified professionals; see the CDC PEP guidance.

How does the 10-day observation process work?

A healthy dog, cat, or ferret that has exposed a person may be confined and observed for 10 days in coordination with public health authorities. The process is relevant even if the animal has a vaccination history, according to the CDC guidance for veterinarians. Public health officials coordinate next steps. Do not try to capture or confine an unsafe animal, or treat observation as a reason to delay medical advice.

Should you report a dog bite?

Ask your local health department or animal-control authority what reporting rules apply. The responsible agency and requirements vary by location, so there is no single reporting route or deadline that applies everywhere. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises following local bite-reporting rules and laws (AVMA dog-bite guidance). If you cannot identify the right agency, ask a healthcare professional or local government information line to direct you.

What information should you get from the dog’s owner?

Collect information only if it is safe. Do not approach an unfamiliar or aggressive dog to get details. The AVMA recommends asking for the owner’s contact information and proof of the dog’s rabies vaccination; WHO also advises sharing information about the animal and bite circumstances with healthcare professionals and public health officers.

What should you watch for afterward?

Follow the clinician’s directions for cleaning, dressing, antibiotics, tetanus vaccination, and whether the wound should be closed. Seek medical advice if you notice increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pain, drainage, fever, or worsening function. South Carolina Department of Public Health advises monitoring the area over the next 24 to 48 hours; this is jurisdiction-specific first-aid guidance, not a universal clinical protocol (South Carolina DPH first-aid guidance).
