Korat cats are affectionate, active companions recognized by their silver-tipped blue coats, heart-shaped faces and muscular, medium-sized builds. They usually need only weekly brushing, but they do need regular attention and play. If you are considering one, ask about inherited gangliosidosis testing and kitten health records; breed descriptions can guide expectations, but an individual cat’s temperament and health are never guaranteed.
What is a Korat cat?
The Korat is a natural breed from Thailand. Its hallmark is a blue coat with silver-tipped hairs that create a frosty sheen, along with a heart-shaped head and a solid, muscular body. The breed associations describe one recognized coat color: silver-tipped blue.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) says the earliest known record of the breed appears in the Cat-Book of Poems, written during the Ayudhya period (1350–1767). CFA also records that Jean Johnson imported the first two Korats to the United States in 1959. CFA’s Korat profile gives further history and breed characteristics.
As general breed-profile guidance, The International Cat Association (TICA) gives females a typical weight range of 6–8 lb and says males can reach 10 lb or more. TICA says Korats may live 15 years or more; CFA says they reach full maturity between two and four years. These are not predictions for a particular cat. TICA’s Korat profile describes the breed’s typical size and lifespan.

What is a Korat’s personality like?
TICA and CFA describe Korats as intelligent, energetic, expressive and strongly attached to their people. They often want to be involved in household activity and enjoy interactive play. These are breed tendencies, not a guarantee: a cat’s personality also reflects its individual history, health and environment.
TICA says Korats need companionship and may become withdrawn if ignored. They are also reported to get along with other household pets, though TICA notes that some may show jealousy when an owner gives attention to another animal. Introduce pets gradually, provide separate resources and observe how each animal responds.
Rank #2
This breed may suit a home where people can make time for daily interaction and play. Korats also enjoy exploring and climbing, so a secure high perch can add useful space and stimulation. If your household is often away or you prefer a cat that seeks little interaction, consider whether you can meet a Korat’s reported social needs before choosing one.
How much grooming does a Korat need?
Not much: CFA recommends brushing once a week to keep the short, single coat in good condition. The coat sheds lightly, according to CFA, but its texture does not make the breed hypoallergenic or reliably low-allergen. People with allergies should spend time around the individual cat before bringing it home; no breed description can promise an allergy-free reaction.

Ask your veterinarian how often to perform these tasks and how to introduce them gently, especially if your cat is not used to handling.
What health issues should you ask a breeder about?
TICA describes Korats as generally healthy but identifies inherited gangliosidosis, including GM1 and GM2, as a genetic concern. TICA says a DNA test was developed in 1998 and advises prospective owners to ask whether the breeder’s cats have been DNA tested. Ask to see the relevant results and have the breeder explain what they mean for the kitten and its parents.
CFA recommends requesting health documentation for a kitten, including vaccination confirmation. These questions are a starting point, not a complete health-screening or preventive-care plan. Arrange veterinary care and discuss an individual cat’s needs with your veterinarian.
Questions to ask before adopting
- Have the kitten’s parents been DNA tested for GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis, and can I review the results?
- Can you provide the kitten’s health records and vaccination documentation?
- How have the kittens been socialized, and what support do you provide after adoption?
- What veterinary care has the kitten received, and what follow-up does the breeder recommend?
CFA and TICA both offer breeder-finding resources. TICA says its directory lists member breeders who have signed its Code of Ethics. A directory listing is not a guarantee of a kitten’s health or a substitute for asking questions and reviewing records. See TICA’s breeder directory and CFA’s breeder resources.

What toys and enrichment suit a Korat?
Interactive play and activities that make a cat think are a good fit for the breed’s reported energy and intelligence. TICA specifically recommends puzzle toys that reward a Korat with kibble or treats. A puzzle feeder is optional enrichment, not a requirement; start with an easy puzzle and adjust the challenge to your cat’s interest and ability.
Use play to encourage movement and engagement, and make climbing options available if your space allows. Rotate toys and supervise new items so you can see whether your cat uses them safely. Choose food and feeding amounts with your veterinarian based on age, body condition and health. TICA recommends quality commercial food and fresh water; it says a raw diet is not necessary and advises veterinary approval if an owner chooses one.
Is a Korat right for your household?
Think about the daily life you can offer, not only the breed’s striking appearance. A Korat may be a good match if you want an interactive companion, can provide regular play and company, and are comfortable with routine coat and dental care. Before committing, meet the cat if possible, ask about health testing and records, and consider how its observed temperament fits your household.
