A urinary blockage can become life-threatening quickly. If there is no emergency clinic nearby, contact a veterinarian who can assess your cat as soon as possible. Do not wait for vomiting, weakness, or collapse to appear.
Signs your cat may have a urinary blockage
Watch for repeated trips to the litter box, prolonged straining, or attempts that produce only drops or no visible urine. A cat may cry while trying to urinate, lick the genital area, pass blood in the urine, or urinate outside the litter box.
- Frequent or prolonged litter-box visits
- Straining with little or no urine produced
- Crying or other signs of pain while trying to urinate
- Blood in the urine or frequent genital licking
- Urinating in unusual places
Vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, or collapse can occur as a cat becomes more ill. These are severe warning signs, not symptoms to wait for before seeking help. Do not press or feel your cat’s abdomen to check for a full bladder; leave that assessment to veterinary professionals.
What to do if your cat is straining
- Call an emergency veterinary hospital and go in immediately. Tell the clinic your cat is straining and producing little or no urine.
- If an emergency hospital is unavailable, call a primary-care veterinarian. Explain the symptoms and ask where your cat can be assessed urgently.
- Do not try to diagnose or treat a blockage at home. Do not wait to see if it passes, press the abdomen, or rely on water, food, supplements, or other home measures to clear it.
Straining to urinate can look like straining to pass stool. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that a blocked cat may appear to be trying to defecate even though little or no urine is coming out. The signs can also overlap with cystitis, stones, and other urinary problems. You cannot reliably tell at home whether the urethra is blocked; a veterinarian needs to assess your cat.

Why a urinary blockage is an emergency
A complete obstruction prevents urine from leaving the body. Kidney function and the balance of fluids and electrolytes can deteriorate, with potentially fatal consequences. The AVMA’s 2024 client brochure says untreated complete obstruction may lead to death in less than 24 to 48 hours; Cornell gives the same possible danger window. This describes how rapidly the condition can become fatal, not a safe period to wait.
“A urethral obstruction is a true emergency,” warns Dr. Canaan Shores, who heads the small animal urgent and convenient care service at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Why male cats are at greater risk
Male cats, including neutered males, are more prone to obstruction because their urethra—the tube that carries urine out of the body—is longer and narrower than a female cat’s. Plugs made of inflammatory material, mucus-like protein, cells, and minerals can block urine flow. Urinary stones can also cause a blockage, but stones are not the only cause.
What veterinary care may involve
The veterinary team will assess your cat and may check blood values, electrolytes, and urine. Depending on the findings, they may recommend additional tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, or urine culture. Similar symptoms can have different causes, and the underlying problem is not always clear without testing.

Emergency care commonly includes pain relief and passing a urinary catheter to relieve the obstruction, generally with sedation or anesthesia. A catheter may stay in place for a few days while swelling subsides. Intravenous fluids and hospital monitoring may also be needed, particularly if the cat is dehydrated or has kidney or electrolyte abnormalities. The treatment plan and discharge timing depend on the cat’s condition.
For repeated obstructions or cases that cannot be managed medically, a veterinarian may discuss perineal urethrostomy, an operation that widens the urethral opening. It is not a routine first step and does not prevent every kind of urinary disease; whether it is appropriate depends on the individual cat and veterinary assessment.

Preventing another episode after diagnosis
Prevention depends on the cause identified by the veterinary team. Depending on the findings, a plan may include a specific therapeutic diet, medication, changes to hydration or the home environment, follow-up testing, or surgery. Do not choose a generic urinary diet or supplement as a substitute for a diagnosis: the appropriate plan can depend on the type of stone or other cause.
Veterinary guidance also supports practical measures such as keeping fresh, clean water available, maintaining a healthy weight, offering enrichment, and providing multiple resources such as resting places, food, water, and litter boxes. Stress and environmental changes can matter in feline idiopathic cystitis. These are longer-term considerations, not treatment for a cat who may be blocked now.
