Cats may suck on blankets because a nursing-like or fabric-suckling behavior has continued from kittenhood into adulthood. Suckling alone does not identify a specific cause or prove that something is wrong. The key safety question is whether your cat only mouths the fabric or chews off and swallows pieces: eating fabric can be pica and warrants veterinary advice.
Why cats suck on blankets
Some cats retain suckling behavior beyond kittenhood. It may happen alongside kneading, often when a cat is settling down, but that behavior by itself does not establish a diagnosis or explain why a particular cat does it.
Possible links to kittenhood and breed
Veterinary references describe early weaning as a possible predisposing factor, not a proven cause in every case. They also note that some Oriental breeds may be more prone to wool sucking or related pica. These are associations, not a way to diagnose an individual cat. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Merck Veterinary Manual discuss fabric sucking, chewing, and possible contributing factors.
Is blanket sucking dangerous?
If your cat suckles without damaging or swallowing the blanket, the behavior alone does not establish a medical problem. The concern rises when the cat chews fabric off and eats it. Ingesting non-food material is called pica; a veterinarian can help assess possible medical causes and advise on next steps. Contact your veterinarian if you see your cat swallow fabric or another non-food item. Seek advice as well if the behavior is new, persistent, intense, or distressing, since a medical issue may need to be considered. VCA Animal Hospitals discusses medical causes and behavior support for ongoing chewing and sucking.
What to do about a cat sucking a blanket
If your cat only suckles
- Observe whether the cat is merely mouthing the fabric or pulling off and swallowing fibers.
- If you can supervise and your cat does not ingest the material, a designated blanket may redirect suckling away from clothing. PetMD describes this as an option, not a treatment: “Is Your Cat Suckling Blankets as an Adult?”
- Stop using that blanket if your cat begins chewing off or swallowing pieces.
If your cat chews or eats fabric
- Remove access to fabric the cat chews or ingests while you seek veterinary advice.
- Tell the veterinarian what material was swallowed, if known, and when you noticed it. Do not treat a designated blanket as a safe redirection option for a cat that eats fabric.
- Ask whether medical causes should be ruled out and whether a veterinary behaviorist could help if the behavior persists. Environmental management and professional support may be appropriate depending on the cat’s situation.
