For a dog that has mild diarrhea but is otherwise acting normally, a short-term bland meal of plain boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice may be appropriate. Keep portions small, leave fresh water available, and avoid seasoning, oil, butter, and sauces. A bland diet is not a treatment for serious illness: vomiting, blood or black stool, lethargy, trouble drinking, suspected toxin ingestion, or worsening symptoms call for veterinary advice.
When a bland diet may help
A plain, simple meal can be a temporary option for an otherwise well dog with mild diarrhea. Cornell lists boiled chicken or low-fat hamburger with white rice, as well as cooked pasta; VCA describes boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice as the traditional bland diet. These foods may be easier to manage while mild symptoms settle, but they do not identify or treat the cause of an upset stomach. Cornell’s diarrhea guidance and VCA’s bland diet instructions describe these options.
Do not use an ingredient your dog is allergic or intolerant to. If your dog has a medical condition, is on a prescribed diet, or has repeated digestive problems, ask your veterinarian before changing food.
How to prepare and offer bland food
- Cook it plainly. Boil chicken breast and cook white rice. Do not add salt, spices, oil, butter, sauces, garlic, or other flavorings. Low-fat hamburger or cooked pasta are other options named by Cornell, but choose only ingredients your dog tolerates.
- Offer small meals. Several small portions are preferable to one large meal. Keep fresh water available at all times.
- Watch your dog, not just the bowl. Stop home feeding advice and contact a veterinarian if signs worsen or any warning sign develops.
VCA’s upset-stomach guidance also recommends small meals and keeping water available. Avoid rich or fatty foods and processed meats; dairy may worsen symptoms in dogs that do not tolerate lactose. Do not give human medicines such as Pepto-Bismol or Imodium unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

Can dogs eat pumpkin for diarrhea?
Plain pumpkin may be offered as an optional food for mild symptoms, but it is not a cure or a substitute for veterinary care. Use plain pumpkin only—not pumpkin pie filling, or pumpkin with added salt, sugar, spices, or other ingredients. There is no one-size-fits-all amount established here, so ask your veterinarian whether it is suitable for your dog and how much to offer. The AKC’s pumpkin guidance explains the distinction between plain pumpkin and products with added ingredients.
Warning signs that need veterinary care
Do not try to manage the problem at home if your dog is lethargic, is vomiting, cannot or will not drink, has blood in the stool, or has black or tarry stool. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the condition is getting worse or diarrhea persists. Seek emergency veterinary care if your dog may have eaten a dangerous food such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, or something containing artificial sweeteners. The VCA guidance identifies dangerous food ingestion as a reason to go to an emergency clinic.

Published timing advice differs: Cornell advises care if diarrhea has not resolved in 48–72 hours and also recommends arranging a visit if it continues more than a day or two; VCA says to seek care if it lasts more than three days or worsens. Treat those as guidance, not a reason to wait when your dog has a red flag or seems unwell. Cornell’s diarrhea page was updated in part in March 2024 by Riney Canine Health Center extension veterinarians.
Use extra caution with puppies
Do not apply adult fasting advice to a puppy. Fasting is usually not advisable for growing puppies, and the AKC recommends consulting a veterinarian before introducing new food. Call a veterinarian if a puppy has diarrhea along with vomiting, lethargy, or poor appetite. See the AKC’s puppy diarrhea guidance.

Return to regular food gradually
Once stools normalize and your dog is doing well, mix the regular food back in gradually over a few days rather than switching abruptly. If symptoms continue or recur, contact your veterinarian; repeated stomach trouble may need an examination, diagnostic testing, or a veterinarian-recommended gastrointestinal diet. VCA advises a gradual return, while Cornell’s diet guidance cautions against relying on chicken and rice repeatedly instead of investigating recurring problems.

Chicken and rice and similar home-prepared meals are not nutritionally balanced for long-term feeding. If your veterinarian recommends a commercial gastrointestinal diet, follow their directions and clarify what they mean by a bland diet: the right choice depends on your dog’s needs and food tolerances. Cornell notes that prescription veterinary GI diets are formulated for easy digestion and are used in many acute diarrhea cases; that does not make every such diet appropriate for every dog.
