Pet Obesity in Canada: How to Spot Excess Weight and Help Safely

A veterinary body-condition assessment—not the scale alone—can show whether a pet needs help. Learn the health risks and steps for a safe, monitored plan.

Excess weight can put dogs and cats at risk of serious health problems, but a scale reading alone cannot tell you whether your pet is overweight. A veterinarian can assess body condition, estimate an appropriate weight, and build a safe plan. The word “crisis” describes the significance of the health issue—not a measured Canadian national prevalence: the available figures do not establish how many Canadian pets are overweight.

Is my dog or cat overweight?

Veterinarians assess body condition as well as weight. They may use a body-condition score (BCS) alongside the animal’s history and ideal weight. VCA Canada describes overweight as 10%–20% above ideal body weight and obesity as more than 20% above ideal, for both dogs and cats. These are clinical guideposts, not a substitute for an individual assessment.

How body-condition scoring works

Scoring systems commonly run from 1 to 5 or 1 to 9, and the ideal score depends on which scale is being used. In the 9-point system described by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 4–5 is ideal, 6–7 is overweight, and 8–9 is in the obesity range. A score is an assessment of body condition, not simply a conversion of pounds or kilograms.

What you can check at home

Feeling over your pet’s ribs can be a rough observation, but it cannot determine an accurate BCS or ideal weight. Ask your veterinary team to assess your pet and explain what to monitor. VCA Canada’s guidance for dogs and cats recommends veterinary-team assessment.

How common is pet obesity in Canada?

A current, nationally representative Canadian estimate was not established in the available sources. VCA Canada relays an APOP figure from its 2022 survey: 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight. Those figures come from a cross-sectional, clinic-based survey, not a measurement of all pets in Canada. A 2020 Veterinary Practice News Canada article says US survey levels are likely comparable to Canada, but that is an inference rather than Canadian prevalence data.

Canadian human obesity statistics should not be treated as pet statistics. For example, the Public Health Agency of Canada’s report that 29.5% of Canadian adults had obesity in 2021 concerns people, not companion animals.

Why excess weight matters for pets

VCA Canada associates excess weight in dogs and cats with shorter life and increased risk of health problems. These are risks, not outcomes that every overweight animal will develop.

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Orthopedic disease, osteoarthritis, and other joint problems
  • Heart disease and hypertension
  • Urinary bladder stones
  • Some cancers
  • Complications involving anesthesia

For cats, there is an additional urgent concern: an obese cat that stops eating is at significant risk of hepatic lipidosis, a potentially life-threatening liver condition. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating; do not try to manage this by simply changing portions at home.

How to help your pet lose weight safely

Start with a veterinary appointment rather than an unsupervised diet. Your pet’s target and feeding plan depend on its current condition, nutritional history, life stage, and any other health problems. A veterinary team can set a calorie target, choose an appropriate food, specify portions and meal frequency, and plan follow-up.

  1. Arrange an assessment. Ask the veterinary team to evaluate body condition, estimate ideal weight, and discuss whether a weight-management plan is appropriate.
  2. Review the whole diet. Include meals, treats, table scraps, chews, and any food offered by other household members. The team can use this feeding history to shape a realistic plan.
  3. Agree on the food and portions. The plan should account for nutrient adequacy at the prescribed serving, species, life stage, and any diagnosed condition that calls for a specific diet.
  4. Measure and feed consistently. Follow the prescribed amount and meal schedule. A kitchen scale can help measure portions, but it does not replace the veterinary plan.
  5. Count treats as part of the daily intake. VCA Canada recommends that snacks and treats make up no more than 10% of daily calories for either dogs or cats. Ask the veterinary team how to apply that limit to your pet’s calorie target.
  6. Attend planned check-ins. Weigh-ins let the team monitor progress and adjust the plan. VCA’s dog guidance suggests monthly weigh-ins; the right schedule can vary by patient and plan.

Can I just feed my pet less?

Do not simply shrink the current ration without veterinary advice. Reducing an ordinary food portion also reduces the nutrients delivered, which can leave a pet short of essential nutrients. VCA Canada explains that therapeutic weight-loss foods are formulated to provide essential nutrients at a restricted calorie intake. The appropriate choice depends on the individual animal; a veterinarian can help determine whether such a diet is suitable.

What should guide a food choice?

There is no single appropriate food for every pet, and the evidence here does not support ranking commercial brands. Discuss these practical points with your veterinary team:
