A firefish goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) can suit a peaceful saltwater or reef aquarium if you can provide a secure cover, sheltered rockwork, calm tankmates, stable marine conditions and a varied diet. It is a poor fit for an uncovered tank or one with boisterous fish that may bully it or keep it from food. Minimum tank-size advice varies by source, so judge the whole setup rather than relying on a single gallon figure.

Check whether your aquarium is large and stable enough

Care sources do not agree on one minimum volume. Fluval Aquatics and Quality Marine recommend 20 US gallons (80 L) or larger, while Fishkeeping lists 25 gallons (114 L). These are husbandry recommendations, not results of a controlled comparison, and a minimum does not guarantee that a tank is suitable regardless of its stocking or layout.

Source Minimum volume Other listed conditions
Fluval Aquatics, 2024 20 US gallons (80 L) 76–78°F (24–26°C); pH 8.1–8.4; specific gravity 1.020–1.025
Quality Marine, page accessed 2026 20 gallons or larger 72–78°F; salinity 1.020–1.025; pH 8.1–8.4; alkalinity 8–12 dKH
Fishkeeping, publication date not shown 25 gallons (114 L) 24–26°C; salinity SG 1.024–1.026

Fluval lists the fish at up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long, but small adult size alone does not make it right for every nano aquarium. Consider whether the tank can maintain stable marine conditions, provide useful rockwork and accommodate all its inhabitants. OATA’s September 2022 goby guide gives broader group-level advice and cautions readers to check the needs of the particular species.

Make the tank escape-proof and give it shelter

Firefish are known to jump. Quality Marine recommends a tight-fitting lid; a fitted mesh screen can also cover the aquarium while allowing airflow. Measure the tank and account for equipment, cables and plumbing so there are no gaps around the edges or openings. A cover that fits the glass but leaves a route beside a filter is not secure.

Swimming Creaturesâ„¢ 1 Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) Fire Goby, Magnificent Firefish, Live Saltwater Aquarium Marine Fish (Size Approx. 2-3")
  • The Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica), also known as the Magnificent Firefish or Fire Goby, is a graceful dartfish admired for its vivid yellow head, white body, and flame-red tail. Calm and elegant, this species adds a flash of color and movement to any reef or community marine aquarium.

Provide aquarium-safe rockwork with stable cracks, crevices or caves where this shy fish can retreat. It also hovers and feeds in the water column, so shelter should not mean leaving it with no accessible swimming or feeding space. Arrange rocks securely rather than relying on loose structures that could shift.

Choose tankmates that will not intimidate it

Plan for peaceful companions. Fluval recommends small, calm reef fish, and Quality Marine advises avoiding tankmates that outcompete firefish for food. Aggressive or boisterous fish can leave a shy individual hiding and unwilling to eat, a problem Fishkeeping also notes.

For an ordinary community setup, one firefish is the safer default. Fluval recommends keeping one unless it is a mated pair; Quality Marine says small groups have been housed together in larger aquariums, while Fishkeeping advises one except in very large tanks. These recommendations do not establish that two unpaired fish will coexist. Consider a pair or group only when the circumstances are appropriate and you can manage the added space and compatibility needs.

Be ready to provide varied food

Fluval describes the fire goby as an omnivore and recommends varied small marine foods, including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, frozen multi-ingredient marine diets, and quality small slow-sinking pellets or flakes. Since the fish feeds in the water column, observe whether food reaches it and whether it actually eats, rather than assuming it is feeding because food went into the tank.

  • 3-PACK FIREFISH GOBY – Includes 3 colorful saltwater fish known for their slender shape and vibrant appearance
  • REEF SAFE AND PEACEFUL – Compatible with a wide range of reef tank species in stable environments
  • ACTIVE AND ELEGANT SWIMMERS – Adds movement and visual interest to saltwater tanks
  • SIZE 1.5–2 INCHES – Well-sized specimens ready for acclimation into established aquariums
  • IDEAL FOR MARINE AQUARIUMS – Thrives in reef setups with rock structures and hiding spaces

Quality Marine recommends meaty foods twice daily and notes that color may fade if a firefish is not well fed. Treat that frequency as the supplier’s advice, not a universal tested prescription. A varied diet and attention to feeding access matter especially where faster or more assertive tankmates share the aquarium.

Will a firefish work in a reef aquarium?

Fluval describes a small reef aquarium with appropriate lower-light corals as an ideal setting and lists small invertebrates such as crabs, snails and shrimp as compatible. Quality Marine also categorizes the fish as reef-suitable. This supports general reef compatibility, not a guarantee for every combination: consider each tankmate and maintain conditions appropriate to the aquarium as a whole.
