Mary Kay Hasseman, a Texas-based horse and dog trainer, is Karen Pryor Academy’s October 2026 Certified Training Partner (CTP) of the Month. Her story connects decades of dressage experience with positive-reinforcement training, dog sports, and a close attention to how animals communicate.
Who is Mary Kay Hasseman?
Hasseman lives in Tomball, Texas, and owns Loving Presence with Horses. She completed Karen Pryor Academy’s Dog Trainer Professional (DTP) program in January 2010 under the guidance of Laurie Luck. These details and the experiences below are from her interview-style Karen Pryor Academy profile, published October 1, 2026.
How did Hasseman get into animal training?
She started with a dog and a homemade book
Hasseman says her first training partner was Chippy, the Springer Spaniel she grew up with. She taught him tricks and, at age 12, made an illustrated book about him called You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
A horse led her toward dressage
At 14, Hasseman got Sherie, an Anglo-Arab horse, and trained her for hunter-jumper classes. One early lesson in the rules came when Hasseman entered a show class with a homemade bitless bridle. She cleared the jumps but was disqualified.

Why did she study at Karen Pryor Academy?
At ClickerExpo in 2009, Hasseman met Karen Pryor in an elevator and asked whether she should take KPA’s dog-training course despite her focus on horses. Hasseman recalls that Pryor encouraged her to enroll. She began the program and completed it the following January with Laurie Luck’s guidance.
Hasseman says KPA helped her look for what an animal was doing right and reinforce it. She found that approach useful with horses, including for dressage movements such as shoulder-in and pirouettes. She also credits training experience and personal study with helping her grow more confident as a teacher, writer, and speaker. These are Hasseman’s reflections on her own development, not independently measured outcomes.

What kinds of training has Hasseman done?
Hasseman says she had trained and enjoyed dressage for more than 40 years at the time of her October 2026 profile. Her work and interests also include dogs:
- She has done agility and tricks with her dog and values the dog’s hearing-alert service work.
- For five years, she performed canine freestyle with three small dogs at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows.
- For a KPA exam, she and her dog Daisy performed a 10-part behavior chain.
Some of Hasseman’s memorable stories are less about planned routines than close observation. She recalls forgetting a dressage test while her horse remembered it, and her horse Tai licking her face while she tried to record a social-media reel. She says she had not deliberately trained those behaviors, and saw them as emerging from their relationship and previous training.

What advice does she give new trainers?
Hasseman advises new trainers to notice small details, try to see situations from the animal’s perspective without assuming the animal thinks like a person, and be willing to do things differently. Her advice is rooted in her own experience rather than a universal formula for every trainer or animal.
She also values learning from seminars and other trainers, while finding that observing her own animals at home can be a meaningful source of continuing education. As she put it in the KPA profile: “After many years of working with animals, I’ve found that some of my richest continuing education happens at home. My own animals surprise me all the time. They show me things about learning, relationships, communication, and even about myself that I never would have found elsewhere or thought to ask about.”

- MANUAL AUDIBLE TRAINING CLICKER: Produces one consistent click sound that can be used as a marker cue when paired with rewards. The clicker does NOT provide commands or instructions to the dog and contains no electronic functions.
- ONE CLICK SOUND – FOUR VOLUME LEVELS: The clicker does NOT produce four different sounds. Three built-in baffle holes provide four volume levels. Cover or uncover the baffle holes until the desired click volume is reached.
- COMPACT PLASTIC CLICKER: This is a small handheld clicker constructed from plastic. Review the product images and compact design before purchase to confirm the size and construction meet your expectations.
- 5-INCH VELCRO FINGER STRAP: Includes an approximately 5-inch adjustable Velcro strap designed to position the clicker on the user's finger or hand for access during training. The strap is worn by the user, NOT the pet.
- INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE TO SOUND MAY VARY: Begin with fewer baffle holes open for a lower click level and adjust gradually. Individual dogs and other animals may respond differently to audible cues. Reduce the volume or discontinue use if the animal shows discomfort or fear.
What book has Mary Kay Hasseman published?
Hasseman’s first book, Notice More, Ride Better: Mindful Reflections for Dressage Riders, is described in her KPA profile as a recently published collection of short reflections and photographs inspired by what she has noticed while riding and training horses and other animals.
The profile also says she was finishing another book, Listening to Be Heard, and expected it to be available in fall 2026. That was a stated expectation in the October 1 profile; the profile does not confirm whether the book was subsequently released.
