After 14 months away, caretaker Darrick reportedly returned to Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, called to the Kham Lha herd, and watched as the elephants approached him. The reunion was described as joyful, but the story does not establish exactly how the elephants recognized him or what they felt.
What happened at Elephant Nature Park?
In a July 8, 2025, account, iHeartDogs writer Dee Michaels says Darrick returned to the park after spending 14 months in Cambodia working on the Elephant Kavann Project. The story says he had been separated from the Kham Lha herd during that time. When he called out on his return, the elephants came toward him.
Michaels describes the elephants trumpeting and surrounding Darrick, and writes that they recognized his voice and came toward him joyfully. Those are the article’s descriptions and interpretation, rather than findings from an expert behavioral assessment. Read the July 2025 iHeartDogs account.
What does the story establish—and what remains uncertain?
The account identifies the setting, Darrick, the Kham Lha herd, his 14-month absence, and the reported approach after he called to the elephants. It presents the moment as a reunion. It does not explain the evidence for how the elephants recognized him, or provide an expert analysis establishing their emotional state.

The story credits its image and video to “elephantnews via YouTube Video.” The linked video was not independently checked for this account, so its footage and provenance cannot be confirmed here. Earlier iHeartDogs versions from 2023 repeat a shorter telling, but they are not independent confirmation: October 2023 version and December 2023 version.
Why the “favorite person” framing needs care
Calling Darrick the elephants’ “favorite” person, or treating the encounter as proof of a particular bond, goes beyond the details the account verifies. The approach and reported calls are the observable actions as described by the story; recognition and joy are its interpretation. The moment can still be moving without presenting that interpretation as scientific fact.
