There is no single best cat food for every cat. Start with a food labeled for cats, check that its nutritional adequacy statement matches your cat’s life stage, and follow its feeding directions. Then weigh health needs, wet or dry format, your cat’s preferences, and budget. The 2026 buying guides cited here offer useful examples, but they do not establish one universal top 10 or prove that any product is best for every cat.
How to choose a food that fits your cat
- Choose food for cats. Check the package species statement; a dog food is not a substitute for cat food.
- Match the life stage. Read the nutritional adequacy statement and confirm it covers your cat’s needs, such as growth for a kitten or maintenance for an adult. Kittens have different nutrient needs from mature cats.
- Look for a complete-and-balanced statement. “Complete” means the food contains all required nutrients; “balanced” means they are present in the correct ratios, according to AAFCO’s label guidance. The statement may say the food is formulated to meet a nutrient profile or that it was substantiated through feeding tests.
- Use the feeding directions as a starting point. Follow the package guidance and consider your cat’s individual condition and veterinarian’s advice when adjusting portions.
- Compare practical fit. Consider health needs, wet or dry format, acceptance by your cat, and what you can afford consistently. A higher price or an appealing ingredient list alone does not establish better nutrition.

The available guides provide examples, not an authenticated or clinically validated top ten for this article. Chewy’s guide, published May 4, 2026, names these category picks. Recheck the current package label and product availability before buying; formulas and labels can change.

Wet food, dry food, or both?
Neither format is automatically best for every cat. PetMD notes that wet food provides more moisture and may suit cats that need more water; dry food is easier to store, can cost less, and can work with an automatic feeder. Let your cat’s needs, preferences, and your budget guide the choice. FDA’s consumer guidance describes canned food as typically 75–78% moisture and dry food as typically 10–12%; those are general ranges, not guarantees for a particular product. How to compare nutrition across labels
Guaranteed-analysis percentages on labels are generally reported on an as-fed basis, while nutrient profiles are expressed on a dry-matter basis. Because wet and dry foods contain very different amounts of water, comparing their listed percentages directly can mislead. Convert values to a dry-matter basis when comparing nutrients across foods with substantially different moisture levels, using the FDA’s complete-and-balanced pet food explanation as a reference.

When a veterinarian should guide the choice
For kidney disease, urinary problems, allergies, digestive issues, weight concerns, or another medical condition, ask your veterinarian to recommend an appropriate diet rather than choosing a therapeutic formula from a general ranking. The 2026 Chewy guide includes veterinary diets for some of these conditions, but such diets are not interchangeable everyday recommendations. PetMD’s Vet Advisory Panel guide, updated January 2, 2026, also emphasizes that food choice depends on an individual cat’s needs and preferences. PetMD notes that the panel is employed by Chewy, its owner, and that manufacturers and vendors cannot buy placement in its Vet Verified articles; its judgments should be understood in that context.

Read current FDA notices and check the lot code if you have a product named in a safety advisory. In its 2026 Quest Cat Food advisory, the FDA reported that tested samples from specified lots were below the AAFCO nutrient-profile minimum of 5.6 mg/kg for thiamine, alongside illness reports. That finding concerns the tested samples and identified lots; it is not evidence that all food from a brand, or cat food generally, has the same problem.
