Cats can distinguish some colors, but their color vision is more limited than ours. A small behavioral study supports the idea that cats are dichromats, while veterinary guidance says they are especially good at detecting motion and seeing in dim light. Those abilities could help explain why one kitten watched Netflix’s animated series Sealook—but the reported reaction does not show that the show’s colors caused it, or that Netflix designed the series for cats.
What colors can cats see?
Cats are not limited to black and white. Evidence supports color discrimination, though the range they distinguish appears narrower than the human range. The best-supported description is that cats have dichromatic color vision: their visual system responds to two main photopic color channels.
That does not mean researchers have mapped every color a cat can experience, or that a cat sees exactly as a person with a particular form of color blindness does. Similarities in one aspect of color vision do not make the two visual experiences identical.
What the cat color-vision study found
In a 2016 paper in Experimental Eye Research, Clark and Clark tested two trained cats using a neutral-point task. The cats could discriminate monochromatic light in the ranges of 456–497 nanometers and 510–524 nanometers, but repeatedly failed to discriminate light at 505 nanometers. The authors concluded that the results strongly supported dichromacy, with a neutral point near 505 nanometers. Read the study abstract on PubMed.

The result has important limits: it comes from two cats in a specific behavioral test, not a population survey. The paper also reviews earlier evidence that was not entirely settled. Most electrophysiological studies it cites found photopic receptor sensitivities near 560 and 460 nanometers, consistent with dichromacy, while a few reported a possible third receptor in the 500–520-nanometer range. Clark and Clark noted that a prior behavioral finding could have been explained by brightness cues.
For that reason, claims that cats see only blue and yellow, or a particular simplified palette, go beyond what this evidence establishes. “Limited color vision” and “evidence supports dichromacy” are more careful summaries.

Why vision is about more than color
Rods and cones contribute different abilities. Veterinary guidance explains that rods help detect light levels and motion, while cones support color differentiation. Cats have more rods than humans, and their visual systems prioritize tasks differently from ours.
VCA Animal Hospitals summarizes the practical difference this way: “When compared to humans, cats see better in dim light (dusk and dawn) and more accurately detect motion.” Better performance in dim light does not mean cats can see in complete darkness.

Other features matter too. A specialty veterinary ophthalmology overview describes the tapetum, a reflective layer that intensifies available light. Reflection can also scatter light and reduce acuity. Visual sharpness, field of view, depth perception, motion sensitivity and color discrimination all contribute to what an animal sees; color alone cannot explain feline vision. Could color or movement explain a kitten watching ‘Sealook’?
An October 2, 2026 article from iHeartCats reports that a kitten named Fig watched the animated Netflix series Sealook and moved toward the screen. The report describes it as a children’s series about playful seals and links to Netflix’s series description. It says there is no indication Netflix created the show around cat vision. Color and animated motion are possible explanations suggested around Fig’s behavior, not experimentally established causes. The report’s story concerns one kitten; reactions shared by other owners online are anecdotal and self-selected, not evidence that cats as a group are obsessed with the program. No causal mechanism for Fig’s attention or intentional cat-focused design is established by the report.

VCA suggests considering color range when choosing toys and notes that cats may find yellow and blue more appealing than red. Treat that as a possible preference, not a guaranteed response or a controlled product finding. A toy’s movement and your own cat’s observed interest are more useful guides than color alone.
