A woman in Folsom, California, thought a sick dog had curled up on her porch. The 2022 account identified the animal as a young coyote suffering from severe mange. Rescuers reportedly arranged professional treatment and rehabilitation before the coyote was released.
What happened on the Folsom porch?
In an October 10, 2022, story, IHeartDogs reported that Sharon Bertozzi found an animal curled up on her porch and believed it was a sick stray dog. It had been there for about four hours when she contacted City of Folsom Animal Services. Responders identified it as a young coyote with a severe case of mange. IHeartDogs’ account is a third-person retelling; no primary case record confirming the specific rescue was available.
How did the coyote recover?
According to the same account, rescuers took the coyote to a clinic for treatment of mange and dehydration and named her Princess. She was later transferred to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue for further care, then to Sierra Wildlife Rescue, where the story says she could recover near another coyote. It reports that Princess and other coyotes were eventually released on more than 800 acres of open land. The story does not identify the release property or provide a primary record for the acreage, so that figure remains the publication’s report rather than an independently verified site description.
Folsom’s current wildlife contacts include Gold Country Wildlife Rescue and Sierra Wildlife Rescue, and Sierra Wildlife Rescue says it rehabilitates coyotes. Those current listings establish the organizations’ relevant roles, not their participation in Princess’s case.

What should you do if you find a sick wild animal?
Do not treat the story as a do-it-yourself rescue guide. Gold Country Wildlife Rescue cautions, “Handling a wild animal can be dangerous to you and harmful for the animal,” and advises people not to approach animals showing signs of disease. Its wildlife emergency guidance recommends contacting wildlife professionals.
Folsom’s advice for wildlife that has obvious injuries or is in immediate peril is not to give it food or water and to transfer it to a nearby rehabilitation facility as soon as possible. Contact local animal services or a wildlife rehabilitator for direction, and follow their instructions rather than handling the animal yourself.
