When Is Pet Weight Gain a Sign of a Health Problem?

Weight gain alone is not a diagnosis. Learn which changes alongside weight gain warrant a vet visit—and why sudden severe abdominal distention needs emergency care.

Weight gain by itself cannot tell you whether a pet is ill. Gradual gain may reflect food intake exceeding activity, but persistent unexplained gain—or gain alongside other changes—deserves a conversation with your veterinarian. The strongest evidence here concerns dogs; in cats, unexpected gain should also be assessed in context rather than used to assume a particular diagnosis.

When should I worry about my dog gaining weight?

Contact your veterinarian about persistent, unexplained weight gain, especially if you also notice changes such as:

  • Lower energy or less activity than usual
  • Changes to the skin or coat
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • A marked increase or decrease in appetite
  • A visibly enlarging abdomen

These signs can occur with different conditions, and none identifies a cause on its own. A veterinarian interprets them alongside your dog’s history and examination. Gradual whole-body gain and a newly enlarged belly are not necessarily the same problem: abdominal enlargement can have causes other than body fat, including fluid accumulation, tumors, or disease. VCA’s overview of abdominal enlargement in dogs describes why it may require investigation.

When a swollen belly is urgent

Seek emergency veterinary care for sudden, severe abdominal distention. Stomach twisting, also called gastric dilatation-volvulus, can cause acute distention and is life-threatening. This warning applies to an acute, severe change—not every gradual increase on the scale. For a new or quickly worsening enlarged abdomen, contact a veterinarian promptly for guidance.

Can hypothyroidism cause weight gain in dogs?

Yes. Canine hypothyroidism can be associated with weight gain, lethargy or reduced activity, cold intolerance, and skin or coat changes. Those signs overlap with other problems, so they are reasons for an assessment, not proof of thyroid disease. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions that “Hypothyroidism is probably one of the most overdiagnosed diseases in dogs.” That is a warning against diagnosing from symptoms alone, not a statistic about how often weight gain is caused by thyroid disease. Merck’s veterinary reference on hypothyroidism notes the need to interpret thyroid findings in clinical context.

Diagnosis may involve an examination and appropriately selected blood tests. A low thyroid measurement does not automatically establish true hypothyroidism: other illness and some medications can affect results. Cornell’s canine hypothyroidism guide and thyroid testing interpretation guidance explain why test results need to be considered with signs and other health factors. Hypothyroidism is commonest in dogs and rare in cats, according to Merck’s dog-owner reference; do not assume it is the explanation for a cat’s weight gain.

What does Cushing syndrome look like in dogs?

Cushing syndrome, or hyperadrenocorticism, can involve a broader pattern of signs than weight gain alone. Merck lists increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, panting, a pendulous abdomen, muscle wasting, and skin or coat changes among common canine signs. A pot-bellied appearance or weight change alone does not establish the condition; veterinary assessment may include routine laboratory evaluation and targeted endocrine testing. See Merck’s Cushing syndrome reference.

Merck’s July 2024 review says 80%–85% of reported canine hyperadrenocorticism cases are pituitary-dependent and 10%–15% are adrenal-dependent. Those figures describe the distribution among reported cases; they do not estimate the chance that a pet with weight gain has Cushing syndrome.

What will the veterinarian check?

The evaluation depends on the animal’s signs and examination. A veterinarian may consider the history, perform a physical exam, and recommend routine blood and urine tests, imaging, or targeted endocrine tests. For suspected thyroid disease, illness, medication, or malnutrition can complicate interpretation of thyroid measurements. No symptom checklist can replace that clinical assessment.

Do not start thyroid hormone, change a pet’s medication, or put the animal on a therapeutic diet based only on weight gain or an online symptom list. Share when the change began and what else you have observed so the veterinarian can decide which checks are appropriate.
