Avoid crash diets or sharply cutting ordinary food: cats need enough complete nutrition, and rapid weight loss or not eating can lead to hepatic lipidosis, a serious fatty liver condition.
Start with a veterinary assessment
Book a visit before changing your cat’s portions. The veterinarian can assess body condition and muscle condition, review health problems and medications, and recommend a suitable target weight and daily feeding allowance. There is no single calorie target that fits every cat; needs depend on the individual animal and should be based on a nutritional assessment. AAHA’s nutrition recommendations call for individualized advice that meets nutritional needs while achieving and maintaining an appropriate body weight: AAHA, How to: Creating Nutritional Recommendations.
Check body shape as well as body weight
A scale alone does not tell you whether a cat is at a healthy weight. AAHA suggests that you should be able to feel the ribs without pressing hard and see a waist when looking down from above. Ask the veterinary team to score body condition and assess muscle condition; an appropriate weight varies by cat.
How quickly should a cat lose weight?
AAHA’s 2024 consumer guidance says cats should lose no more than 1%–2% of body weight per week. Treat that as an upper recommended range, not a target to impose at home: your veterinarian should set the pace and adjust the plan to your cat’s condition.

Do not withhold food or make a sudden, steep cut to force faster loss. Inadequate intake or rapid weight loss can trigger hepatic lipidosis, a potentially life-threatening fatty liver condition. If your cat stops eating or loses weight suddenly, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled check.
How much should you feed an overweight cat?
Feed the daily amount prescribed for your cat, not a generic online calorie figure or an estimate based only on current weight. Count the entire diet: meals, treats, table scraps and food offered by everyone in the household. AAHA recommends measured portions and controlled meals rather than unmeasured free-feeding; the meal schedule should be practical for your household and appropriate for your cat.

Make portions consistent
- Weigh the prescribed food portion on a digital kitchen scale when possible. It can improve portion accuracy, but it cannot determine your cat’s calorie needs.
- Write down the amount fed and any treats, and make sure every household member follows the same plan.
- Ask the veterinarian how treats fit into the daily allowance. AAHA’s 2024 article gives 20 calories of treats for an 8-pound cat at ideal body condition as an illustration only; it is not an allowance for every cat, particularly one on a weight-loss plan.
Should you switch to weight-loss cat food?
Not automatically. The important question is whether the chosen food supplies appropriate nutrition at the calorie level your cat needs. If significant calorie restriction is required, AAHA recommends considering a nutrient-fortified therapeutic weight-loss diet to reduce the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Its guidance specifically recommends therapeutic weight-loss diets for patients undergoing significant calorie restriction for weight loss: AAHA, Use of Therapeutic Diets Designed to Promote Weight Loss.
Ask the veterinarian to select a suitable food and transition plan based on your cat’s health, preferences and prescribed allowance. Protein, fiber and moisture can matter: higher protein may help spare lean mass, fiber may support satiety, and more moisture may help some cats feel fuller. None of these features guarantees weight loss, and the available guidance does not establish that wet or dry food is universally better.

Build activity into the plan
Movement and enrichment support a weight-management plan, but they do not replace measured feeding. AAHA suggests at least two 10–15 minute play sessions a day in its 2024 consumer article. Adapt play to your cat’s age, mobility and temperament, and ask the veterinarian what is suitable if your cat has health or movement limitations.
- Try interactive play with a wand toy, in short sessions your cat can manage.
- Offer climbing structures, shelves or scratching posts where they are safe and accessible.
- Use a puzzle feeder as an optional way to add food-based activity, while keeping its contents within the prescribed daily amount.
Monitor progress and adjust with your veterinarian
Record your cat’s weight and the food and treats provided so that changes can be interpreted alongside the plan. AAHA’s consumer guide recommends weighing every two weeks; its 2026 diabetes guideline says caregivers of at-risk cats should weigh monthly. These schedules address different contexts, so follow the schedule set by your treating veterinarian and review progress with them rather than changing portions on your own.

Weight optimization and enrichment are sensible lifestyle measures for cats at risk of diabetes, but weight loss alone should not be presented as a way to prevent the disease. AAHA’s 2026 guideline says no known strategy currently prevents diabetes in at-risk cats. If your cat is at risk, discuss monitoring and overall care with the veterinarian: AAHA, Section 5: Recognizing and Managing Cats at Risk for DM.
