The encounter may look like a stalk or chase; that description alone cannot establish the bird’s motive. Cassowaries can injure people, so observe from a distance and never feed, approach, or try to handle one.
What is known about the beach encounter?
Posts use descriptions such as “A beachgoer’s encounter with a southern Cassowary” and refer to Cape Tribulation. Those descriptions are leads, not independent confirmation of when the event happened or what preceded the footage. No verified witness account or original source for the specific encounter is established in the available material.
Without that context, it is not possible to say that the bird deliberately stalked or chased the person, or to explain why it moved toward them. A dramatic close approach is not, by itself, evidence of a particular intent.
Are cassowaries dangerous?
They are powerful wild birds capable of seriously injuring a person. The Smithsonian National Zoo says its staff use a safety barrier and do not enter cassowary space while the birds are present; its explanation describes defensive jumping and kicking with sharp inner claws. That is a clear reason to give a cassowary room, not proof that every approach is an attack. Smithsonian National Zoo: Cassowary

What historical attack records show
In a 1999 Journal of Zoology review, Queensland zoologist Christopher Kofron recorded 221 cassowary attack incidents, including 150 against people. Among the attacks on people in that historical review, 75% involved birds that had previously been fed by people; victims were chased or charged in 71% of incidents and kicked in 15%. These are reported cases from a historical review, not a current estimate of an individual beachgoer’s risk or evidence about the bird in this clip. Kofron, Journal of Zoology (1999)
Feeding can change the risk
In an ABC Science archive report from 1999, Kofron warned: “Feeding cassowaries changes their natural behavior, making them bold and aggressive.” This is historical, attributed advice—not a current official statement or an explanation of the particular bird’s behavior. ABC Science (1999)

National Geographic’s recent reporting summarizes expert opinion that cassowaries are not naturally aggressive, while noting that food-conditioning can alter their behavior. That broader context cautions against labeling the species bloodthirsty or assuming that an approach means an attack. National Geographic: Cassowaries
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if a cassowary approaches?
- Keep your distance and do not move closer for a photo or video.
- Do not feed the bird, try to touch it, or attempt to handle it.
- Give it space rather than blocking or crowding its path.
These precautions follow the Smithsonian’s own barrier-based approach to keeping people out of cassowary space. ABC Science’s 1999 archive also quoted advice to move behind a tree or leave without turning your back if confronted; because that is dated advice, it should not be treated here as a confirmed current Queensland protocol.
