A Golden Retriever named Rio reportedly moved closer to the screen to follow animated seals in Netflix’s Sealook. It is a charming account of one dog’s reaction—not evidence that Golden Retrievers, or dogs generally, prefer the show. Canine vision and sensitivity to motion offer context for why a dog might notice a television, but they do not explain Rio’s behavior for certain.
What happened when Rio watched Sealook?
An iHeartDogs article published October 1, 2026, reports that Rio, a Golden Retriever, watched the animated seals on screen and moved closer as they moved. The article says it was created with AI assistance and edited by the iHeartDogs team.
The story is an anecdote. The underlying video or original social post was not independently authenticated, so the available account does not establish who filmed the clip, who first shared it, or when the footage was made. It does not support claims about Rio’s owner or how widely the clip circulated.
What is Sealook?
The iHeartDogs story describes Sealook as a short-form animated children’s comedy on Netflix, dating to 2023, about seals. Those details come from the article’s description: its Netflix link was not independently retrieved. The report does not establish that the series was created for pets.

Can a dog see what is happening on TV?
Dogs see color, but not in the same way people do
According to the American Kennel Club’s overview of canine color vision, dogs are dichromatic: they distinguish blues and yellows better than red-green hues. That is different from human trichromatic color vision. It is useful background, but the available account gives no evidence about the show’s palette or whether its colors drew Rio’s attention.
Motion may attract attention, but it is not a proven explanation
The AKC also explains that rods in the retina are associated with sensitivity to motion and that dogs have more rods relative to cones than people. The organization’s chief veterinary officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, notes: “For the purpose of hunting in the dark, canine eyes have a larger lens and corneal surface and a reflective membrane, known as a tapetum, that enhances night vision.” These are general features of canine vision; they do not show why Rio watched this particular program.

Does Rio’s reaction mean dogs like watching Sealook?
No. The report describes one Golden Retriever, not a study of dogs or a pattern across the breed. The article itself notes that dogs vary in their interest in television and that not every dog will watch Sealook. A dog looking at moving images is not, by itself, proof of a special preference for this show.
