Bears may approach cars while moving through their habitat, investigating smells, or looking for food. Food and rubbish left accessible can reward a bear and teach it to return to places associated with people—but seeing a bear walk toward a car does not, by itself, reveal why that individual is approaching. Keep food and scented items secured, and if you see a bear near the road, stay inside your vehicle and follow the local wildlife authority’s instructions.

Why do bears approach cars?

Bears share landscapes with roads and developed areas, so an animal near a car may simply be traveling through its habitat. Smells can also attract its attention. In places where bears find human food or rubbish, an easy meal can teach them to revisit areas associated with people.

The National Park Service explains that access to human food and garbage can cause food conditioning: bears may lose some natural fear of people and approach them for food. Grand Teton National Park likewise notes that bears can remember where they found food and return to developed spaces when food is easy to reach. These are reasons a bear might return to an area; they do not establish the motive of every bear near a vehicle.

How to avoid attracting bears to your car

  • Keep food, food scraps, rubbish, pet food, coolers, and other scented items secured rather than accessible from outside the vehicle.
  • Use a storage method permitted at your destination. Depending on local rules and the setting, that may be a closed hard-sided vehicle, a park food locker, or an approved bear-resistant container.
  • Never feed a bear or leave scraps behind. Easy access to human food can change bear behavior and put both people and bears at risk.

Storage requirements differ by location, so check the rules for the park or land you are visiting. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Bear Safety guidance discusses securing attractants; follow the specific requirements of the local land manager.

What to do if a bear is near the road

  1. Stay in your vehicle. Olympic National Park’s black bear guidance says: “If you see a bear near the road, stay in your vehicle.”
  2. Do not approach, follow, feed, or get out for a closer photograph. Give the animal space and avoid crowding it.
  3. Follow the local authority’s instructions. Rules and responses vary by park. Yellowstone National Park advises visitors to remain at least 100 yards (91 meters) from bears. It also says to honk and drive away if a bear approaches or touches the car. Do not assume that Yellowstone’s specific distance or response applies everywhere.

See the National Park Service guidance for Olympic National Park and Yellowstone National Park before visiting, and check current instructions for your location.
