Start near the enclosure, keep children and other pets out of the search area, and look along walls and in dark, secure hiding places—especially around dawn, dusk, or at night. If the snake may be venomous, you cannot identify it confidently, or you cannot approach it safely, do not try to catch it; keep your distance and contact local animal control or a qualified reptile professional.
Make the area safer before searching
Move children and other pets away, and keep household activity quiet. Close doors to limit the snake’s access to other rooms only after checking the gaps and making sure you will not trap anyone in the room with it. Do not chase, corner, or grab a snake you cannot confidently identify and handle safely. The CDC advises calling animal control rather than trying to remove or trap a snake in the home; local services and procedures vary.
These precautions apply even if the snake is a familiar pet. If you see it and are uncertain about its identity or safe handling, keep people and pets away and contact local animal control. The Wisconsin Herpetological Association offers search advice, while CDC guidance covers snakes in homes generally; neither establishes one universal removal procedure for every location.
Search from the enclosure outward
Begin at the escape point and expand the search gradually. The Wisconsin Herpetological Association recommends looking at dawn, dusk, or night, when snakes may be more active. Check along walls and baseboards, then inspect nearby dark, secure spaces behind or beneath furniture. Snakes may also seek warmth, so look around appliances and other devices that generate heat, such as refrigerators, stoves, heaters, washers, and dryers.

Approach likely hiding places carefully. Do not reach blindly into an inaccessible space, and do not move a heavy appliance or piece of furniture without considering the risk of crushing or injuring a snake. Check the original enclosure thoroughly as well: the snake could be under substrate or furnishings, beneath a bowl, around a rim, behind a backdrop, or inside a heating or lighting shroud.
Flour tracking and improvised live traps are not generally reliable ways to locate a snake, according to the Wisconsin Herpetological Association. Avoid glue traps: they can injure the animal and create an entanglement problem that requires professional help.

Decide whether capture is safe
If you find the snake, pause and keep everyone else back. Consider whether you can identify it and approach it without risk. If you are unsure, it is injured, or it is difficult to reach, do not attempt capture; contact local animal control, a reptile veterinarian, or an appropriate wildlife professional. The New Mexico Wildlife Center also recommends seeking qualified help when a snake cannot be safely managed; its services are local, so use the equivalent resource where you live.
If a person is bitten, move away from the snake and seek immediate medical attention. If another pet is bitten, keep it away from the snake and contact a veterinarian promptly, as the CDC advises.

Prepare containment before a safe capture
Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine recommends preparing a suitably sized container with air holes made in advance and a tight-fitting lid. A knotted pillowcase is another option in its guidance. Choose only an option you can close securely and use without putting your hands near the snake; do not treat these options as a reason to handle an animal that is unsafe to approach.

For a snake that can be safely contained, Tufts advises gently sliding it into the prepared container rather than picking it up by hand when possible. That advice concerns an animal in need of help; it is not a general instruction to capture any snake. If capture does not feel safe, leave it to a professional.

If the snake is injured or entangled
Get professional help if the snake appears injured, has been bitten by another pet, cannot move part of its body normally, or is stuck to a trap. Do not try to remove a glue trap or treat an injury yourself; Tufts warns that removing a snake from a glue trap can damage its skin.
Tufts advises keeping a contained animal awaiting transport in a warm, quiet place. Do not improvise a heat source that could overheat it. Ask a veterinarian or wildlife professional about appropriate temperature and transport for the species. Prevent another escape
After the snake is secure, inspect the enclosure, doors, lid, and closures to find how it got out. The Wisconsin Herpetological Association recommends a secure, lockable, ventilated enclosure. For a glass terrarium, use a properly fitted and secured top; makeshift weights or improvised latches are not suitable substitutes. Choose equipment appropriate to the snake and enclosure.
If the snake repeatedly attempts to escape, VCA Animal Hospitals recommends providing secure hiding places and describes an exterior visual barrier on the enclosure as one possible measure. That general guidance does not establish why a particular snake escaped. If the behavior continues, review its husbandry and enclosure setup with a reptile veterinarian.
