Are Mussels Fish? How Freshwater and Marine Mussels Shape Their Ecosystems

Mussels are bivalve mollusks, not fish. Freshwater and marine species filter water and shape ecosystems, but their conservation needs depend on habitat.

No. Mussels are bivalve mollusks, not fish. The name covers species living in different environments: native freshwater mussels inhabit rivers and lakes, while marine mussels such as the blue mussel live in coastal waters. Both filter food from water, but their ecological roles and the conservation issues they face depend on where they live.

What mussels are—and why freshwater and marine mussels are different

Mussels belong to the bivalve mollusks, a group of animals with two hinged shells. They are not fish. “Mussel” is a common name used for bivalves from distinct groups and habitats, so claims about their conservation or ecology need to specify which mussels they mean.

Topic Native freshwater mussels Marine mussels
Where they live Rivers and lakes Coastal and marine waters
Example or scope Native North American freshwater mussels in the order Unionida Blue mussels, including those discussed in NOAA’s aquaculture material
Ecological focus Filtering water and influencing stream nutrient dynamics, primary production, and aquatic communities Filtering algae and organic matter; mussel beds and farms can also affect coastal habitat and sediments
Management focus River habitat, flow, water and sediment quality, and host-fish movement Aquaculture siting, growing-water quality, and food-safety monitoring

These are different contexts, not a ranking of which group matters more. NOAA identifies blue mussels as bivalve mollusks, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) defines its native freshwater mussel work around the order Unionida. NOAA’s blue mussel overview and the USGS science vision for native freshwater mussel research explain those respective scopes.

Why mussels matter to aquatic ecosystems

Freshwater mussels filter and influence streams

Native freshwater mussels are active filter feeders. They remove algae, sediment, nutrients, harmful bacteria, and metals from the water as they feed. Their activity can influence nutrient dynamics, primary production, and the mix of other aquatic species in a stream. For these reasons, USGS describes them as ecosystem engineers: organisms that help shape how their ecosystems function.

Filtering is not the same as making polluted water safe. Mussels cannot replace pollution prevention, wastewater treatment, or other measures that address contaminants at their source. A 1999 USGS fact sheet also notes that live adult mussels are sensitive to water and sediment contamination, making them useful indicators of ecosystem health and stability. See the USGS freshwater mussel fact sheet.

Marine mussels can affect coastal water, sediments, and habitat

NOAA says blue mussels filter phytoplankton, algae, organic matter, and excess nutrients. Mussel beds can stabilize coastal sediments and reduce storm-surge impacts; farm structures can provide habitat. Harvesting mussels also removes nitrogen and phosphorus from the ecosystem. The scale of these benefits depends on the site and farming conditions, so they should not be assumed for every farm or coastline. NOAA describes these roles in its blue mussel resources.

Are freshwater mussels endangered?

Many native freshwater mussels are imperiled, but the figures below describe North America and the United States—not all mussels worldwide:

  • North American diversity: USGS reported in 2023 that North America has more than 350 native freshwater mussel species.
  • U.S. threatened or endangered estimate: A separate USGS page, published in 2019, estimated that about 30% of the United States’ 300 freshwater mussel species are listed as threatened or endangered.

The figures have different dates and scopes; the U.S. estimate is not a worldwide percentage or a current count of every mussel species. The 2023 USGS science vision says causes of declines remain unknown in many cases, and that distribution, taxonomy, and life-history information are incomplete or unreliable for some species.

What pressures can harm freshwater mussels?

USGS identifies several possible or suspected pressures. Their importance can vary by species and river, and they should not be treated as proven causes in every location.

  • Habitat loss or fragmentation, including changes to river channels and navigation impacts.
  • Altered flow, depth, or temperature, which can strand or displace mussels with limited mobility and disrupt reproduction.
  • Contaminants and pollution from point and non-point sources.
  • Disease and non-native species.
  • Barriers that limit movement of host fish used by mussel larvae.
  • Climate change.

USGS notes that the causes of local and widespread declines are mostly unknown. Its freshwater mussel research overview discusses suspected pressures and research on population health, contaminants, ecosystem services, and restoration. A separate USGS overview of freshwater mussels’ ecological-flow needs describes work on how water quantity and flow characteristics affect them.

Why restoration takes more than adding mussels

Moving mussels into a river is not enough if the site lacks suitable habitat or water and sediment conditions. USGS describes evaluating a site’s geomorphology and hydrology, water and sediment quality, and contaminant levels before selecting it for restoration. Chemicals of concern can include ammonia, major ions such as potassium and chloride, and metals such as copper and nickel.

USGS gives an approximate freshwater mussel lifespan of 10 to 50 years. That long lifespan makes recovery and assessment long-term efforts: a short-term count alone may not show whether a population is sustaining itself. Host-fish movement can also matter because freshwater mussel larvae are connected to host fish; barriers to fish movement may therefore affect conservation. The details of that relationship vary by mussel species.

How marine mussel farming works—and what food safety requires

Mussels can be cultivated on the seafloor or suspended in the water column, using methods such as ropes, rafts, and bouchot systems. They do not need feed: they filter phytoplankton directly from the water. NOAA describes aquaculture as the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of aquatic organisms, including shellfish; it can serve food production, commercial, habitat-restoration, and population-rebuilding purposes. See NOAA’s overview of aquaculture.

Wild and farmed shellfish can be exposed to naturally occurring toxins and bacteria, including Vibrio species. Officials monitor growing areas because contaminated shellfish can pose food-borne risks. Conditions and closures change, so anyone gathering or buying shellfish should follow current local advisories rather than rely on general information about mussels.
