Do Cartilaginous Fishes Have Internal Fertilization?

Living sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras use internal fertilization, but their offspring may hatch from laid eggs or be born live.

Yes. Living cartilaginous fishes—sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras—fertilize eggs inside the female’s reproductive tract. In sharks and rays, males use paired structures called claspers to transfer sperm. This does not mean every species gives birth to live young: some lay eggs after internal fertilization.

How internal fertilization works

Internal fertilization means sperm and egg unite inside the female’s reproductive tract. In sharks, a male’s claspers are modified pelvic-fin appendages that transfer sperm. The Florida Museum of Natural History describes the male inserting a clasper into the female’s cloaca; Smithsonian Ocean describes claspers on the male’s rear underside.

The familiar clasper mechanism applies to sharks and rays; it should not be taken to mean that every cartilaginous-fish group has identical reproductive anatomy. For the living group as a whole, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa describes fertilization as internal.

Internal fertilization does not tell you whether a fish lays eggs

Fertilization location and the way offspring develop are separate traits. OpenStax explains that a shark can fertilize eggs internally and then lay eggs that hatch outside the mother, or retain embryos and give birth to live young. Among live-bearing forms, embryos may rely on yolk or receive additional nourishment from the mother.

Question What it means What happens in living cartilaginous fishes
Where does fertilization occur? Where sperm and egg unite Inside the female
Where does the embryo develop, and how does the offspring emerge? Whether eggs are laid outside the body or development is retained until live birth Both egg laying and live birth occur; nourishment strategies vary

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that about 57% of chondrichthyans give birth to live young, with the remainder laying eggs in horny capsules. The year for that figure is not stated in the surfaced FAO chapter, whose page crawl is older, so treat it as the chapter’s reported proportion rather than a newly verified estimate.

What the group-wide answer covers

Chondrichthyes includes sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras. Sources from the FAO and Te Papa support internal fertilization across living members of the group. That conclusion is about modern chondrichthyans; it does not establish the reproductive method of every extinct lineage.

Individual cases can also differ from the usual account of a recent mating. Smithsonian Ocean reports that female sharks can store sperm and that several cases of parthenogenesis—development without fertilization—have been recorded. These are qualifications to the typical pattern, not a reason to describe the group’s ordinary reproduction as external fertilization.
