First, let any raccoon still inside leave safely; then remove food attractants and close the confirmed entry point only after checking that the animal and any young are gone.
What to do if the raccoon is still inside
- Keep people and pets away. Do not approach, corner, or try to handle the raccoon.
- Close interior doors between the living room and the rest of the home. Indiana Department of Natural Resources advises closing doors that lead to other parts of the house.
- Make a quiet route outdoors by opening an exterior door or window if you can do so without getting close to the animal. Give it space to leave on its own.
- Close the route after it leaves, including a pet door or other opening it could use to return. If you cannot create a safe exit or the raccoon will not leave, contact local animal control.
If anyone is bitten or scratched, contact a medical professional or local public-health authority promptly. If a pet is injured, call a veterinarian. Rabies response and wildlife rules vary by location.
Use a camera to find the route, not as a barrier
If you are unsure which animal is visiting or when it arrives, a wireless trail camera can help identify activity. Michigan Department of Natural Resources recommends trail cameras for identifying wildlife causing damage. Aim one at a suspected route from a safe, suitable location, such as near a pet door, garage access, or the outside of a roofline. Check the footage to narrow down where and when animals are passing.
A camera observes; it does not block entry or reliably deter a raccoon. Use what it shows to guide an inspection and a repair rather than treating the device as the solution.

Check likely entry points and attractants
Raccoons seek sheltered places and can reach roofs using nearby trees. From a safe position, look for openings or access around:
- Pet doors and doors connecting to a garage
- Roof edges, attic openings, damaged siding, or screens
- Chimneys and vents
- Branches that reach or overhang the roof
Also check what may be drawing wildlife close to the house: unsecured garbage, pet food left outdoors, or an open pet door. Secure trash and food, close the pet door when it is not in use, and trim branches that provide easy roof access.

NYC Health suggests bright or flashing lights and loud music to encourage an intruder to leave. Those measures are for eviction, not lasting exclusion. Michigan DNR notes commercial lights and chemical repellents may work only briefly. Do not rely on an ultrasonic device as an evidence-backed fix.
Confirm the den is empty before sealing it
Do not close an opening while a raccoon—or young raccoons—may still be inside. Check for occupants before making repairs. Once you have confirmed they have left, close the verified route with a durable material appropriate to the opening; DC Health recommends heavy-duty hardware cloth for larger openings. A suitable chimney cap or secure vent cover may address those specific routes.

For a high roof, chimney, attic, or otherwise inaccessible opening, use a properly licensed local wildlife professional rather than risking a fall or trapping an animal inside. If temporary lights or noise fail to encourage the raccoon to leave, NYC Health also recommends escalating to a professionally licensed operator. Verify local licensing requirements and wildlife rules before hiring anyone.

Animal-control contacts, wildlife-control licensing, rabies guidance, and rules about handling or relocating wildlife differ by jurisdiction. Do not assume that relocation is permitted or appropriate where you live; for example, Tennessee’s wildlife agency says relocation is ineffective and illegal in some areas of that state because of rabies concerns. For an animal that will not leave, an inaccessible den, or questions about local requirements, contact local animal control or a qualified local professional.
