Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteValerie, a miniature dachshund, went missing from a campground on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, in November 2023. Kangala Wildlife Rescue captured her on April 25, 2025—529 days later—and she reunited with owners Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock on May 6, 540 days after she disappeared. Rescuers said she was fit and well, but how she survived in the wild remains unknown.
From a campsite escape to a 529-day search
Gardner and Fishlock were camping on Kangaroo Island when Valerie escaped from a pen while they were away fishing. They searched for several days before returning to mainland Australia without her. Early searches and reported sightings did not lead to a quick recovery.
Local residents continued to see Valerie over the following months. In February 2025, a photograph taken at a farm provided clear confirmation that she was alive. Lisa Karran, a wildlife rescuer with Kangala Wildlife Rescue, later said the image “pretty much sparked the entire search.”
The dates tell two parts of the story: ABC News reported that Valerie was captured on April 25, 2025, after 529 days missing; she was reunited with her owners on May 6, 540 days after her disappearance. “Sixteen months” is a rounded description, not the exact count to either milestone.

How rescuers adapted the search
Kangala Wildlife Rescue and volunteers built their capture effort around sightings and Valerie’s wary behavior. Rather than rushing to approach her, they used cameras to monitor activity and worked to make the trap familiar and inviting.
- Track sightings: Local reports and camera footage helped the team understand where Valerie was moving.
- Use familiar cues: Rescuers placed her bedding and toys, clothing carrying her owner’s scent, and food near the trap.
- Wait for a safe moment: A remote door system let the team trigger the trap only when Valerie was calm, positioned inside, and clear of nearby wildlife.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue told ABC News on April 26, 2025, that the effort involved more than 1,000 volunteer hours and roughly 5,000 kilometres travelled. Those are the rescue organization’s reported estimates, not independently audited totals.

What is known—and unknown—about Valerie’s survival
The Associated Press reported that Valerie weighed 4 kilograms when she went missing and 6.8 kilograms when captured. Rescuers described her as fit and well. Those details establish her condition at two points; they do not explain how she found food or shelter during her time away.
Suggestions that she may have eaten roadkill or animal droppings were speculation, not a verified account of her diet. ABC’s October 6, 2025, retrospective noted that only Valerie could tell the exact story of her survival. It would be misleading to claim she hunted a particular animal or relied on a specific food source.

A reunion after 540 days apart
On May 6, 2025, rescuers brought Valerie to Gardner and Fishlock. Gardner recalled: “I was sitting on the ground when [rescue owners] Lisa and Jared brought Valerie in, and she ran straight up to me — I just burst into tears.” Kangala director Jared Karran said, “We felt like we came to know Valerie through the camera.”
Gardner also offered a message to other people whose pets are missing: “For anyone who’s ever lost a pet, your feelings are valid and never give up hope.” Valerie’s recovery followed sustained local attention and a carefully adapted search; it does not mean any one tool or method can guarantee a lost dog will be found.
