The transfer was a carefully planned road journey across the Nullarbor. Perth Zoo said the move would give Permai access to other female elephants, while Monarto now has a five-elephant herd.
Where is Permai now?
Permai lives at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Monarto’s timeline records her arrival on 29 January 2025 after a 40-hour, 2,700-kilometre journey from Perth. Monarto Safari Park’s timeline
Her arrival was the beginning of a gradual settling-in process, not an instant introduction to the rest of the herd. Perth Zoo reported that staff monitored Permai’s behaviour and began contact with Burma, Monarto’s first elephant, through mesh. Their first reported meeting included gentle trunk contact. Later updates said Permai was eating, drinking, exploring and interacting gradually. Perth Zoo’s arrival update Monarto Safari Park’s timeline
Why did Perth Zoo move Permai?
Perth Zoo said it announced in 2018 that its elephants would move after the eventual passing of Tricia, the zoo’s matriarch. Tricia died in 2022, leaving Permai and Putra Mas at Perth Zoo. The zoo said its inner-city grounds did not have enough space to appropriately care for a full herd and that Permai needed the company of other female elephants. Perth Zoo’s explanation of the move

Monarto says visitors can reach the elephant habitat on foot or by the Zu-loop bus.
