Western Australian authorities seized suspected illegally kept exotic and native animals in Perth in June 2024 as part of Operation Closepablo, an investigation into illegal animal importation, keeping, breeding and sale. The government named several species but did not give a total count or a complete inventory. The investigation was reported as ongoing when the seizure was announced on 28 August 2024.
What animals were seized in Perth?
The WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) named these examples in its 28 August 2024 announcement:
- Exotic animals: an African spurred tortoise, a caiman crocodile and an African parrot.
- Native animals: lace monitors, a pig-nosed turtle and an Australian freshwater crocodile.
The release does not state how many animals were seized overall or claim that this is the complete list. Its body text says “African parrot”; an image caption identifies an African grey parrot.
What was Operation Closepablo investigating?
DPIRD led Operation Closepablo to investigate suspected organised importation, keeping, breeding and sale of illegal exotic animals in Western Australia. The department worked with the state Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and received support from other national compliance agencies. The seizure took place in June 2024; the government announced it on 28 August.

The authorities described the animals as suspected illegally kept. The announcement did not establish that every animal had the same legal status, nor did it report a conviction. At the time of the announcement, investigations into suspected illegal trading were ongoing. PerthNow also reported the seizure and ongoing investigation that day, but its report does not establish any later case outcome.
What laws did the government cite?
The government release said Western Australia’s Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 makes importing or possessing declared pests illegal and that significant penalties may apply. It also said the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 protects fauna and makes taking or possessing fauna without lawful authority an offence. The release described some of the animals seized as protected and threatened species as well as declared biosecurity pests in WA.

What happens to the seized animals?
DPIRD said it aims to rehome animals where they can lawfully be kept and their biosecurity risks and welfare needs can be properly managed—for example, in authorised zoos. The release does not identify the destination of each animal, so individual placements cannot be confirmed from it.
