Rare specimens can have bells more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) across and tentacles longer than 100 feet (30 meters). That is an exceptional jellyfish—not evidence that scientists have just discovered a routinely building-sized animal.
What animal is the headline describing?
The lion’s mane jellyfish is the largest species associated with this story. Its bell is the rounded, umbrella-like body; its tentacles trail from beneath it. Those measurements must be kept separate: a jellyfish with a 6-foot bell is not 100 feet wide, but its tentacles can extend more than 100 feet downward or outward in the water.
A June 17, 2025, Daily Galaxy article presented the animal as a giant increasingly encountered near human populations and referred to a Marine Biology study. The article did not identify the study’s authors, title, publication date or DOI, so its specific claim that climate change is driving a worldwide increase in nearshore encounters cannot be treated as established.
How big can a lion’s mane jellyfish get?
| Measurement | What the evidence supports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Bell diameter | Rare individuals over 6 feet (1.8 m) | An exceptional upper-end figure, not a typical size |
| Tentacle length | Over 100 feet (30 m) in rare specimens | Length of trailing tentacles, not bell width |
| Famous 1865 report | 7.5-foot bell and tentacles longer than 120 feet (36.6 m), according to Alexander Agassiz | A disputed historical record with incomplete measurement details and taxonomic uncertainty |
The Smithsonian describes the six-foot-plus bells and 100-foot-plus tentacles as rare extremes. Most lion’s mane jellyfish are smaller, and their appearance varies with age, food supply and environmental conditions.

Is the 120-foot jellyfish record real?
The often-repeated 120-foot figure comes from a statement attributed to naturalist and Harvard professor Alexander Agassiz, who wrote about measuring a specimen at Nahant in 1865:
“I measured myself a specimen at Nahant, the disk of which had attained a diameter of seven and a half feet, the tentacles extending to a length of more than one hundred and twenty feet.”

A 2015 peer-reviewed review reproduces that account but points out that the original measurement details were not provided. It also notes that Cyanea populations in the eastern United States may be genetically distinct from European C. capillata. The number is therefore best described as a historical, contested observation—not a confirmed maximum that applies uniformly to every lion’s mane jellyfish.
Are giant jellyfish moving closer to shore because of climate change?
Climate effects on jellyfish are plausible but not a single worldwide trend. Smithsonian Ocean explains that warmer water can accelerate embryo and larval development in some jellyfish and expand habitat for warm-water species. The same warming can reduce suitable habitat for cold-water species.

NOAA Fisheries reports that jellyfish populations in Alaska have fluctuated dramatically in connection with climate and prey conditions. Its monitoring programs cover the eastern Bering Sea (surveys beginning in 2004), the Chukchi Sea (2007) and the Gulf of Alaska (2012). Those are program dates, not a measurement showing a global increase in giant jellyfish near people.
Local changes in temperature, currents, prey availability and wind can all alter where jellyfish are seen. A report of more animals at one coastline does not by itself establish a climate-driven expansion of lion’s mane jellyfish worldwide.

What should swimmers and beachcombers do?
- Do not touch a live jellyfish. Avoid the bell and every trailing tentacle.
- Do not handle a stranded specimen. Tentacles can remain hazardous after the animal is on the beach.
- Keep children and pets away. Report unusual concentrations to local lifeguards or wildlife authorities rather than moving the animals.
NOAA advises avoiding contact. The available sources do not establish that lion’s mane jellyfish are commonly fatal, so the sensible response is careful avoidance rather than sensational claims.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What scientists have—and have not—shown
Established
- The lion’s mane jellyfish is a known species, not a newly discovered animal.
- Rare individuals can exceed 6 feet in bell diameter and 100 feet in tentacle length.
- The 120-foot account is a 19th-century record whose documentation and taxonomic identity remain uncertain.
Not established by the headline’s evidence
- That a newly found individual was literally the size of a building.
- That scientists recently measured a universally accepted 120-foot C. capillata.
- That climate change is causing a worldwide increase in nearshore lion’s mane jellyfish encounters.
The spectacular part of the story is real: this species can rank among the ocean’s largest jellyfish when tentacle length is counted. The “building-sized new discovery” framing goes beyond what the documented evidence shows.
