The remarkable part is real: researchers recorded an approximately 20-minute acoustic exchange with an adult female humpback whale named Twain in Southeast Alaska. But the experiment did not use an AI system to translate whale vocalizations into English, and it did not show that scientists understood what the whale meant.
The 2023 peer-reviewed study documented playback of a recorded humpback contact call, Twain’s vocal responses, and patterns consistent with acoustic turn-taking. That is evidence of a potentially meaningful interaction—not a working whale-language translator or a human-style conversation.
What the viral claim gets wrong
Popular coverage, including a 2024 Daily Galaxy article, framed the event as an AI-enabled human–whale dialogue. It suggested that whale sounds had been translated into understandable human language and implied that researchers could identify the whale’s preferences or emotions.
Those claims go beyond the evidence. The underlying study, published in PeerJ on November 29, 2023, describes an acoustic playback experiment and post hoc statistical analysis. It does not report a real-time AI translator, a decoded whale vocabulary, or human-understandable answers.

What actually happened?
The researchers played a recorded humpback whale contact call near Twain, an adult female humpback identified through long-term photo-identification and sighting records. The encounter took place in Southeast Alaska and lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Twain approached or engaged with the research vessel and produced vocal responses. The team recorded the sounds and observed behavior such as surfacing and respiration. They then analyzed the timing of the playback and Twain’s calls, including response latency and temporal matching.
The researchers described three broad phases:
- Engagement: Twain remained involved with the playback and showed the strongest timing relationship with the signal.
- Agitation: The interaction changed as the whale’s behavior and responses shifted.
- Disengagement: Twain eventually moved away from the exchange.
The study was conducted under National Marine Fisheries Service Research Permit No. 19703. Twain was a wild animal, not a trained or domesticated whale.
What did the researchers discover?
The reported timing patterns were consistent with turn-taking: the playback was followed by whale responses, and the relationship between the signals varied across the encounter. During the engagement phase, the timing appeared more closely matched than during agitation or disengagement.
That is scientifically interesting because it suggests that Twain may have been responding to the external signal in a socially relevant or communicative way. It provides a basis for designing more controlled interactive playback studies.

But timing is not translation. A response can indicate interaction without revealing the response’s meaning. Twain might have been socially motivated, curious, attracted to the sound, startled, agitated, or reacting in another way that researchers cannot yet distinguish.
Was AI involved?
AI and machine-learning methods may become useful in the broader study of whale communication, but the reported 20-minute exchange was not a demonstrated AI translation session.
The published experiment involved:
- Playback of a recorded humpback call
- Hydrophone and observational recordings
- Analysis of acoustic timing and behavioral responses
- Statistical examination of the exchange after it occurred
It did not demonstrate a system that continuously interpreted each whale response, generated a semantically appropriate reply, and translated the resulting exchange into human language. The researchers discussed future possibilities involving more adaptive playback and computational analysis, but those are proposed research directions rather than capabilities established by this experiment.
What does “conversation” mean here?
“Conversation” is reasonable only if it is carefully defined. In this context, it means an observed reciprocal acoustic exchange or apparent turn-taking—not a human-style discussion with shared words and understood topics.
The study did not establish:
- A shared vocabulary between humans and humpback whales
- Known meanings for Twain’s calls
- Whale grammar decoded by researchers
- Questions asked and answered in a human-understandable sense
- That Twain expressed a specific preference or emotion identified by the team
- That humans and whales can now communicate in real time
The authors characterized the findings as preliminary and presented interactive playback as a method for investigating nonhuman intelligence, not as a completed communication technology. Their interpretation that Twain actively or intentionally engaged with the exchange remains an inference from acoustic and behavioral evidence.

Why the study still matters
A wild whale altering its acoustic behavior in relation to a playback signal is a valuable observation, especially because it can be examined quantitatively. The work may help researchers investigate:
- Turn-taking and vocal coordination
- Recurring social calls
- Individual whale identification
- Context-dependent vocal patterns
- Differences between individuals and populations
- More adaptive acoustic experiments
Future computational tools could help find recurring call patterns, classify signals, model context, identify individuals, and select playback signals during experiments. None of those potential applications should be confused with semantic translation.
Why the research is connected to SETI
The project also connects to the SETI Institute’s interest in detecting unfamiliar intelligence. The methodological idea is that studying how humans might recognize and interact with a potentially intelligent communication system on Earth could inform how researchers think about signals from beyond Earth.
That connection is conceptual and methodological. The whale study is not evidence of extraterrestrial communication, and it does not show that whale calls have been decoded.

A credible claim of translation would require much stronger evidence than one unusual field encounter. Researchers would need to show, for example:

- Controlled experimental contexts that separate communication from attraction, alarm, curiosity, and general arousal
- Stable associations between specific calls and independently verified situations
- Predictions tested on new recordings or unseen animals
- Blind trials that reduce researcher expectations and interpretation bias
- Replication by independent research teams
- Generated signals that produce predictable, context-appropriate responses
Even then, identifying a signal’s function would not necessarily amount to translating a language in the human sense. Animal communication may not map neatly onto human words, grammar, or conversation.

The study does not determine whether Twain’s calls had stable meanings, whether she recognized the playback as a social signal, or whether her responses were communicative, emotional, exploratory, or reactive. It also does not show whether the exchange can be reliably reproduced, whether playback changed her natural behavior, or whether other humpback whales would respond similarly.
Repeated playback must therefore be designed carefully. Future work will need appropriate permits, minimal disturbance, controlled protocols, replication, and attention to animal welfare. The 2023 experiment itself did not produce a conservation tool or a system that can ask whales questions and understand their answers.
The accurate verdict
Scientists really did document an approximately 20-minute acoustic exchange with Twain, and the results are consistent with engagement and turn-taking. The peer-reviewed study is a promising example of how interactive playback can help investigate nonhuman communication.
But the viral version reverses the level of certainty. AI did not translate whale speech, researchers did not decode a whale language, and Twain did not demonstrably answer human questions. The event is best understood as a preliminary, intriguing interaction—not a breakthrough whale translator.
