Are Axolotls Freshwater Fish? Habitat, Care Needs, and Species Information

Axolotls are fully aquatic freshwater salamanders, not fish. Here is what their biology means for water temperature, tank design, feeding, conservation and responsible ownership.

Axolotls are freshwater amphibians, not fish. They are the salamander species Ambystoma mexicanum, and they remain fully aquatic through adulthood. In captivity they need cool, clean, dechlorinated water, gentle filtration and a roomy tank with plenty of floor space.

What an axolotl is

An axolotl is a neotenic mole salamander. Unlike most amphibians, it normally does not metamorphose into a land-dwelling adult. It keeps juvenile features—including the feathery external gills on each side of its head—and spends its entire life in water.

That biology explains why an axolotl should not be housed like a fish in a warm tropical aquarium or like a terrestrial salamander in a partially dry enclosure. Its gills, skin and swimming ability are adapted to a stable aquatic environment.

Do axolotls live in freshwater or saltwater?

They require freshwater. Wild axolotls evolved in the lakes and canals of the Valley of Mexico, and their captive water should be treated tap water rather than seawater or marine aquarium water. Saltwater is not an appropriate substitute for the low-salinity conditions their physiology requires.

Native habitat and conservation status

The species is native to the Mexico City region. Its geographic distribution has included the canals of Xochimilco and the lakes of Chalco and Chapultepec. Xochimilco is the key remaining wild habitat and is described by Conservation International as the last wild lake system supporting axolotls.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance describes axolotls as critically endangered. The decline is linked to several interacting pressures:

  • Pollution and wastewater runoff that degrade water quality and reduce oxygen.
  • Habitat degradation and diversion of water from the lake-and-canal system.
  • Introduced carp and tilapia, which compete with axolotls or eat their eggs and young.
  • Collection from the wild, identified by WWF as an additional pressure.

Conservation projects in Xochimilco have used water filters and barriers or other methods to keep non-native fish out of refuge areas. A precise wild-population number is not included here because the available authorities do not establish one consistently enough to quote.

Captive water requirements

Temperature

Zoo Med recommends keeping the aquarium at 60–64°F (15.6–17.8°C) and says the water should never exceed 72°F (22.2°C). Use a reliable aquarium thermometer and check it regularly, since room temperature and equipment can cause daily fluctuations. Zoo Med lists a Digital MIN-MAX Precision Thermometer as one product designed to record high and low readings; the important requirement is accurate monitoring, not a particular brand.

Persistent warmth can stress an axolotl and compromise water quality. If the aquarium approaches the upper limit, address the room and aquarium conditions rather than assuming a fan alone will maintain a safe temperature.

Water quality and maintenance

  • Condition tap water before it enters the aquarium so chlorine and related disinfectants are removed.
  • Carry out a 30% water change every week, while removing waste and checking the animal’s condition.
  • Keep the axolotl fully submerged; it is not a species that needs a dry basking area.
  • Use gentle filtration. Strong currents can exhaust a weak swimmer and irritate its external gills.

The University of Kentucky Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center also emphasizes frequent water changes and fully aquatic housing. Test water whenever an animal appears stressed or the tank develops an odor, cloudiness or an unusual buildup of waste.

Setting up an axolotl aquarium

Tank size and footprint

Zoo Med suggests a 50-gallon Low Boy aquarium for an adult. The key design feature is broad horizontal floor space rather than a tall, narrow tank. Water should be at least as deep as the animal’s body length, with enough open area for turning and resting.

Choose an aquarium that allows safe access for maintenance and leaves room for a properly sized filter, thermometer and hides. A larger footprint also makes it easier to keep conditions stable as the animal grows.

Hides and surfaces

Provide caves or other hides so the axolotl can retreat from light and activity. Every shelter should be stable, fully aquatic and free of sharp edges that could tear delicate gills or skin. Arrange décor so the animal cannot become trapped and so routine cleaning remains practical.

Tank mates

A species-only aquarium is the simplest and safest arrangement. Zoo Med does not recommend keeping axolotls with live fish because fish may nip their sensitive gills. Do not add a companion merely to make the aquarium look more active; compatibility problems can cause injury or chronic stress.

What axolotls eat

Zoo Med lists prepared axolotl food, aquatic-newt food and bloodworms among suitable foods. Offer food appropriate to the animal’s size and remove uneaten portions so they do not pollute the water.

If live fish or amphibians are used as food, the University of Kentucky guide advises using aquarium-bred feeder animals. Captive-bred feeders reduce the chance of introducing parasites or pathogens carried by wild-caught prey.

Responsible ownership

Check the law before acquiring one

Axolotl rules vary by state and locality. Some jurisdictions restrict possession, importation or sale. Contact the current wildlife or natural-resources authority where you live before purchasing or transporting an animal; a static list can become outdated as regulations change.

Use a legal, traceable source

Choose a legally sourced captive-bred axolotl and ask for clear information about its origin and health history. Avoid removing animals from the wild, particularly because the wild species is critically endangered.

Plan for the full commitment

WWF recommends confirming that you can provide suitable housing, food, water quality and veterinary care for the animal’s entire life. A cool aquarium may require changes to the room or equipment during hot weather, and routine water maintenance is not optional. Arrange access to a veterinarian familiar with aquatic amphibians before bringing an axolotl home.

Quick answers

  • Are axolotls fish? No. They are salamander amphibians.
  • Are they freshwater animals? Yes. Their natural and captive environments are freshwater.
  • Do they stay aquatic as adults? Yes. They retain juvenile gills and normally do not metamorphose.
  • What is the most important aquarium control? Keep water cool, clean, dechlorinated and gently filtered, and monitor temperature continuously.
  • Are wild axolotls endangered? Yes. The species is critically endangered because of habitat and water-quality losses, invasive fish and other human pressures.
