No. Fish are not all carnivores: depending on the species and its usual food, a fish may be carnivorous, herbivorous, or omnivorous. Some more specific labels describe fish that eat drifting animal plankton or decomposing organic matter. These terms describe a fish’s typical diet—not necessarily every meal—and they do not tell you by themselves how it gets food.
What do carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore mean for fish?
Diet labels describe the food a fish usually consumes. They are different from labels for feeding behavior, such as hunting or grazing.
- Carnivores eat animal material. Some actively pursue or ambush live prey; others feed on animal matter without hunting. In a food web, a carnivore’s trophic position depends on what its prey eats.
- Herbivores primarily eat plants, algae, or phytoplankton. Some fish graze on algae.
- Omnivores eat both plant and animal material. Common carp are an example; an omnivorous fish may favor animal foods or plant foods.
- Zooplanktivores feed on tiny drifting animals, such as copepods and water fleas. They eat animals, but the term identifies a more specific food source.
- Detritivores consume detritus—decomposing organic matter. Scavengers may eat dead remains. Neither label necessarily means the fish hunts live prey.
These categories are useful shorthand, not guarantees about every feeding event. NOAA notes that many consumers are opportunistic feeders and may eat what is available in the food web.
How do predatory fish catch food?
Fish that eat animal prey do not all capture it the same way. These broad examples illustrate different strategies; they are not exhaustive, and members of a named group need not all behave identically.

Sit-and-wait suction feeding
Some scorpionfishes, flatheads, and frogfishes wait concealed, then open a large mouth and draw prey in with suction.
Predators also affect more than the animals they eat. Changes in predator abundance can ripple through a food web, affecting other species in a trophic cascade.

Why a fish’s diet can change
Species is only part of the picture. A fish’s age and environment can affect what it eats: fry and larvae may consume algae and small planktonic animals, while adults may have different feeding habits. Environmental changes and food availability can also influence diet. The FAO aquaculture training manual cautions that fish classifications are “indicative, not definitive.”
Body and digestive features can offer clues, but they are not a reliable stand-alone way to identify an unknown fish’s diet. As broad tendencies, carnivores often have a short gut and an extendable stomach suited to larger prey; plant-leaning omnivorous common carp have pharyngeal teeth and a long intestine; and herbivores, particularly phytoplankton consumers, may have the longest and most complex gut. These patterns are associations, not a diagnostic key.

What should aquarium owners feed their fish?
Do not choose a captive fish’s food from a generic “carnivore” or “herbivore” label alone. Fish have species-specific nutritional needs, and requirements can vary by life stage. Prepared foods can provide necessary nutrients for captive fish, but a generic product category is not a feeding plan. Check reliable care guidance for the particular species and age, and use it to select an appropriate diet.
