Some Indian insect populations are declining, but there is no single, reliable nationwide percentage for “insect loss.” Evidence is uneven across regions and groups, especially in the tropics. What is clear is that insects in particular places are facing several pressures at once: habitat loss and fragmentation, intensive land use, pesticides and other pollution, climate change, invasive species and biological stressors. Those pressures matter because insects pollinate crops, recycle nutrients, control pests and support food webs.

Are insects really disappearing in India?

The most accurate answer is “in some groups and places, yes; everywhere and at the same rate, not established.” Tropical insect monitoring is sparse and uneven, and studies are not distributed equally among India’s regions, habitats or insect groups. A local fall in butterflies, bees or beetles cannot be converted into a single national trend for every insect.

A 2025 review of tropical ecosystems nevertheless identifies a consistent set of major threats: land-use change and habitat fragmentation, pollution (including pesticides and artificial light), invasive species and climate change. These pressures can reinforce one another. Clearing a flowering habitat removes food and nesting sites; pesticide exposure can then hit the insects remaining in a smaller, more isolated patch.

So “decline” should be read as a pattern documented for particular populations or places, not as proof that every Indian insect species is disappearing.

What is driving insect losses?

Habitat loss and fragmentation

Conversion of forests, grasslands, wetlands and field margins removes shelter, breeding sites and flowers. Fragmentation leaves smaller patches separated by roads, buildings or intensive farmland. Populations in isolated patches have fewer places to feed and reproduce and may be less able to recover after drought, heat or disease.

Pesticides, pollution and artificial light

Insecticides can kill non-target insects as well as crop pests. Herbicides can remove the flowers and host plants on which pollinators and caterpillars depend. Other pollutants add stress, while bright night lighting can disrupt insects that navigate, feed or reproduce after dark. The effect depends on the chemical, dose, timing, weather, crop and species exposed; it is not accurate to treat every pesticide application as equally harmful.

Climate change

Warmer temperatures, altered rainfall and more frequent extremes can change where insects survive and when they emerge. Indian studies describe shifts in the number of generations per year, insect–plant relationships, natural enemies, invasive-species risk and disease transmission. A change in timing can also create a mismatch: an insect may emerge before or after the flowers, prey or host plants it needs.

Invasive species and biological stressors

Introduced insects can arrive without the predators, parasites or diseases that limit them in their native range. They may compete with native species, damage crops or alter plant communities. Pathogens, parasites and nutritional stress can compound the effects of habitat loss, chemicals and heat rather than acting as isolated causes.

How is climate change altering Indian insects?

Climate change affects more than insect abundance. It can alter phenology (the timing of life-cycle events), geographic ranges and interactions among species. Indian research reports changes in generations per year, relationships between insects and plants, the activity of natural enemies, the risk posed by invasive species and the transmission of disease.

Bees are particularly sensitive to temperature and to the availability of flowers. A warm spell may increase activity briefly, but if it arrives when floral resources are scarce, the result is not necessarily a healthier bee population. Adaptation therefore requires both climate planning and habitat that supplies food across the season.

Why pollinators matter to India’s food supply

Bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, birds and bats move pollen between flowers, enabling fruit and seed formation. India’s Press Information Bureau stated on 18 March 2026 that the country has more than 800 bee species along with these other pollinators.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation estimated that pollination services represented about 8–10% of India’s total crop-output value during 2012–13 to 2021–22. Its estimate increased over that accounting period:

2012–13 to 2021–22 About 8–10% of total crop-output value Share reported for the accounting period, not a value for every crop or every year

These figures describe the economic contribution of pollination; they do not mean that every crop depends on insects to the same degree. If pollination falls, fruit and seed formation can fall too, while the eventual effect on farm income and food prices varies by crop, region and market.

Are pesticides killing pollinators?

Pesticides can harm pollinators, but the practical question is how exposure occurs and what happens to the crop. A study of 27 Indian aubergine farms found that plots with high pesticide-application frequency had 27.4% lower fruit set. The study also recorded reduced pollinator visitation on those plots, providing a plausible mechanism linking frequent applications with poorer pollination.

This result is evidence from aubergine farms, not a universal percentage for every crop, chemical or landscape. Risk changes with product, dose, timing, drift, flowering stage and whether flowering weeds or non-crop habitat are present. Reducing unnecessary or high-frequency applications and using integrated pest management can lower exposure while retaining tools for serious outbreaks.

What does the rise of invasive pests show?

An Indian Council of Agricultural Research review reports that more than 15 invasive insect pests entered and became established in India during 2013–2023, compared with about 10 during 1889–1989. The comparison points to a growing agricultural concern, not a count of all harmful insects or proof that every recent arrival will spread nationwide.

Early detection, quarantine, diverse plantings and locally appropriate biological controls can slow establishment. Climate change may increase the area suitable for some newcomers, so surveillance has to track both trade pathways and changing environmental conditions.

Why should people care beyond farms?

Insects perform several jobs at once:

  • Pollination: supporting fruit and seed production in crops and wild plants.
  • Natural pest control: predators and parasitoids suppressing crop pests.
  • Decomposition and nutrient cycling: breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to soil and plants.
  • Food-web support: providing food for birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

Losses in one group can therefore produce effects that are not obvious from a single field or garden. The scale and direction of those effects differ among ecosystems, which is why local monitoring matters.

What can farmers, communities and households do?

Protect and reconnect habitat

Keep native vegetation, hedgerows, field margins, wetlands and small forest patches where possible. Connecting patches gives insects more continuous routes between feeding and breeding sites. Retain a sequence of flowering plants rather than a single short bloom period, and avoid removing every non-crop plant from field edges.

Use chemicals more selectively

Base treatment on scouting and thresholds instead of routine calendar spraying. Choose the least harmful effective option, follow the label, avoid spraying open flowers when pollinators are active, prevent drift and keep untreated refuge areas where feasible. Integrated pest management combines monitoring, cultural practices, mechanical measures and biological controls; the right mix depends on the crop, pest and local conditions.

Reduce disruptive pollution and light

Prevent runoff and improper disposal of pesticides and other chemicals. Shield, dim or switch off unnecessary outdoor lights at night, especially near flowering plants and habitat. These steps are not guarantees, but they remove avoidable stressors identified in tropical insect research.

Plan for climate timing

Protect water and shade, maintain flowering resources through the season and choose planting dates with local heat and rainfall patterns in mind. Climate adaptation should be added to habitat and pesticide measures because it affects distributions, life-cycle timing and plant–insect synchrony.

Monitor and report changes

Record pollinators and other insects with dates, locations, photographs and habitat notes. Community surveys and citizen-science records can fill gaps in tropical monitoring when observations are made consistently and identified carefully. Reports are most useful when they distinguish a change in sightings from a measured change in population size.

The bottom line

India’s insects are under real pressure, but the evidence does not support one simple national extinction statistic. Habitat change, chemicals and pollution, climate shifts, invasive species and biological stressors interact, producing declines in particular groups and places. Protecting flowering habitat, reducing unnecessary pesticide exposure, limiting disruptive light and pollution, adapting to climate change and improving monitoring are practical responses. Their success will depend on the insect, crop, season and landscape involved.
