Yes. Lake Erie supports many fish species, including walleye, yellow perch, white bass, white perch, smallmouth bass, steelhead and lake whitefish. These are examples from fisheries monitoring, not a complete list, and their abundance differs between the lake’s western, central and eastern areas.
What fish live in Lake Erie?
Official Ohio fisheries monitoring tracks several important Lake Erie fish, including:
- Walleye: Ohio’s most popular Lake Erie sportfish.
- Yellow perch: The second most targeted sportfish in Ohio waters.
- White bass
- White perch
- Smallmouth bass
- Steelhead
- Lake whitefish
Monitoring programs also record additional species, including forage fish and other less prominent populations. The species above should therefore be read as representative examples rather than a complete inventory of Lake Erie fish.
Are fish spread evenly throughout the lake?
No. Fish abundance, recruitment, distribution and fishing success can vary substantially among Lake Erie’s western, central and eastern zones. Conditions also differ by species and from year to year. A fish that is common or highly targeted in one area may be less abundant in another.

How do agencies know fish are there?
Fisheries agencies use standardized surveys rather than trying to count every fish individually. Ohio’s 2024 assessment used several methods:
- Bottom trawls to sample fish living near the lakebed
- Gill nets for selected species
- Electrofishing in suitable habitats
- Hydroacoustic equipment to assess fish abundance and distribution
Depending on the species, surveys measure relative abundance, recruitment, growth, maturity, diet and distribution. These results help agencies identify population trends and guide management.

How many fish are in Lake Erie?
There is no single authoritative whole-lake number in the available official assessments. Fisheries scientists generally report survey-based abundance indices, recruitment and other species-specific measures instead of a total count of every fish in the lake.
A harvest figure is not a population count
Ohio’s 2024 annual report estimated that anglers harvested 1.2 million yellow perch in Ohio Lake Erie waters during 2024. That is an estimate of recreational harvest in Ohio waters for that year—not the number of yellow perch living in Lake Erie and not a lake-wide harvest total.
