No fish are known to live in Lake Hillier. The published survey of this hypersaline lake found an aquatic community made up of salt-loving microorganisms—archaea, bacteria, algae and viruses. Its approximately 28% reported salt concentration is far more suitable for halophiles than for ordinary freshwater or brackish fish.
What the Lake Hillier survey found
A peer-reviewed metagenomic and culture-based study sampled Lake Hillier’s water and sediment in February 2015 and published its findings in 2022. The lake is a terminal perennial lake on Middle Island in Western Australia’s Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve.

The 28% salinity figure is the study’s reported value, not a current real-time measurement. The sampling campaign provides strong evidence about the lake’s documented biology, but—as with any finite survey—it cannot prove that an organism has never entered the water.
Why fish are not expected in the lake
Hypersalinity places severe physiological demands on fish. Western Australian ecological guidance notes that very salty water restricts habitat for many brackish and freshwater fish species. Lake Hillier’s terminal basin, high salinity and limited phosphate supply favor organisms with specialized salt-management and energy strategies instead.

Accordingly, the accurate conclusion is no fish have been reported from the published Lake Hillier survey, rather than a claim that it is mathematically impossible for a fish ever to enter the lake.
What does live in Lake Hillier?
Archaea and bacteria
The study reconstructed 21 complete or partial genomes from bacteria and archaea. Only two could be assigned to species previously observed elsewhere, suggesting that Lake Hillier may contain unusual or potentially novel lineages.

Named salt-tolerant or pigment-associated organisms include Salinibacter, Halobacillus, Psychroflexus and Halorubrum. Many of the organisms were classified as polyextremophiles—microbes adapted to more than one harsh condition.
Algae
Dunaliella, a salt-tolerant alga, is among the pigment-producing organisms discussed in the study. Its cellular chemistry helps it remain viable where ordinary algae and aquatic plants would struggle.

Viruses
Viral sequences were also part of the lake’s microbial community. Viruses are an important component of hypersaline ecosystems because they infect and influence the populations of bacteria and archaea.
What makes Lake Hillier pink?
The pink color is associated with a consortium of pigment-producing halophilic microorganisms rather than with fish or larger aquatic animals. Organisms such as Dunaliella and Salinibacter produce pigments and other compounds that can tint the water.

Lake Hillier is described as persistently pink, but the intensity can change with seasonal conditions. Light, evaporation, salinity and the relative abundance of different microbes can all affect how vivid the color appears at a given time.

Yes, fish are recorded in marine habitats around Middle Island. The University of Western Australia’s Marine Futures project describes fish diversity in the island’s surrounding environments. Those records concern ocean and coastal habitat, not the lake basin itself.

Lake Hillier’s inland hypersaline water and the nearby sea are separate ecosystems. Finding fish around Middle Island therefore does not establish that fish live in Lake Hillier.
How scientists can answer a “no fish” question
Ecologists generally report what a defined survey detected. In this case, researchers sampled water and sediment and documented a diverse microbial assemblage, with no fish recorded. That supports the practical answer visitors want while preserving the scientific qualification: an absence in the published sampling record is not proof of a universal negative.
- Documented in the lake: archaea, bacteria, algae and viruses adapted to extreme salinity.
- Not documented in the published survey: fish.
- Documented nearby: fish in Middle Island’s surrounding marine habitats.
The Bottom Line
Lake Hillier has no fish known from the published survey. Its unusual aquatic life is microbial: halophilic archaea, bacteria, algae and viruses whose pigments help create the lake’s famous pink appearance.
