Yes—fish live in the Erie Canal, and anglers can fish its waters. Smallmouth bass and walleye are prominent targets in the Mohawk River/Barge Canal reach, but species, access, conditions and regulations vary across this long waterway. Pick a specific section before planning your trip, then check its current conditions and rules.
What fish can you catch in the Erie Canal?
The clearest official species information in the available sources concerns the Mohawk River/Barge Canal, not every reach of the Erie Canal. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) describes that Mohawk section as a productive warmwater fishery, especially for smallmouth bass and walleye. Its 2024 open-water survey from Rome to Waterford also found anglers targeting carp, northern pike, channel catfish and freshwater drum.
In that survey, NYSDEC interviewed just over 2,000 anglers at 42 fishing access sites, drawn from more than 3,500 anglers. Smallmouth bass was the most targeted sportfish. These findings apply to the surveyed Mohawk reach; they are not a complete species inventory for the entire canal system. Choose a reach and check conditions
Because the canal covers distinct sections, start by deciding where you plan to fish rather than assuming that a species list or access point applies everywhere. NYS Canals provides fishing-location information and a USGS-linked conditions tracker. The agency notes that flow rates can affect which species are available, so check conditions close to your trip date.

NYS Canals also describes a 2026 fall fishing program involving seasonal releases to certain creeks. Those releases concern named tributaries, and canal water levels and winter drawdown influence them; they should not be treated as a canal-wide fishing forecast. - Confirm access: Use the official location information to identify a suitable fishing access point for your chosen reach.
- Check flow and conditions: Review the linked USGS information near your planned date, since flow can affect species availability.
- Bring basic equipment: A freshwater rod-and-reel combo is a reasonable starting point for angling. No universally effective lure, color or rod length is established by the official materials cited here.
- Check bait and gear rules: Review current New York rules before using bait or other equipment.
Check the fishing license and rules for your exact water
New York generally requires people age 16 and older to have a freshwater fishing license to take freshwater fish by angling. The state lists exceptions, including designated free fishing days; verify current requirements and dates on the New York freshwater fishing license page.

Fishing rules depend on both the species and the water. For example, New York’s 2026 freshwater regulation guide sets a walleye season of May 1 through March 15, an 18-inch minimum size and a daily limit of three for the Erie Canal reach from the Seneca River confluence upstream to Lock 26. That example is specific to that reach and walleye; do not apply it to other canal sections or species. Check the 2026 New York freshwater fishing regulations for the water and fish you plan to target. NYSDEC’s general freshwater fishing regulations also explain that an uninjured fish released immediately does not count toward the daily limit.

Look up the exact reach and fish species in the New York fish advisories by county before eating your catch; a recommendation for one section or species should not be assumed to apply to another.
