In common bottlenose dolphins, the vagina generally has one large internal fold that projects into and bisects the vaginal opening. The shape varies among cetacean species, and researchers have not settled on a single function for these folds.
What does a dolphin’s vagina look like?
The unusual shape is an internal feature: a fold of the vaginal wall that projects into the vaginal lumen. In a study of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), researchers generally found one large fold dividing the lumen.
That finding describes the dolphins in the study, not every dolphin species. A comparative study of female cetaceans found wide variation in the number and size of vaginal folds.
How do vaginal folds vary among cetaceans?
Cetaceans do not all have the same vaginal anatomy. Studies report differences in fold number, size, and shape, as well as variation in vaginal length and the overall shape of the reproductive tract. The research does not establish a simple ranking of species by anatomy.
#1 Best Overall
| Evidence | What researchers studied | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Orbach and colleagues, 2016 | 18 common bottlenose dolphin specimens from the southeastern United States | The dolphins generally had one large fold bisecting the vaginal lumen. |
| Orbach and colleagues, 2017 | 59 females from 20 cetacean species and six families | Vaginal fold number and size vary widely. |
| Orbach and colleagues, 2017 | 61 specimens across 24 cetacean species | The study analyzed variation in genital shape and its associations with anatomical and evolutionary factors. |
These are separate studies with different samples and research questions; their specimen counts should not be combined. The 2016 study also used 90 histological samples from five specimens to examine tissue, not to describe the shape across all cetaceans.
What might the folds do?
The function of vaginal folds is not fully resolved. Researchers have proposed that folds could affect the movement of sperm or seawater, and that they may help manage mechanical forces during mating.
A 2019 biomechanical study tested female dolphin reproductive tissue. Its findings were consistent with folds resisting deformation and dissipating forces, but they do not prove that the folds have one definitive function or evolutionary purpose. The comparative study likewise discusses functional explanations as hypotheses, not settled conclusions.
How did researchers study the anatomy?
Researchers examined reproductive tracts from specimens and used anatomical measurements and tissue analysis. In the 2016 study, the sample comprised 18 common bottlenose dolphins at different maturity and reproductive states. The researchers generally observed one large fold bisecting the vaginal lumen.

They found that the vaginal musculature consisted of smooth muscle, suggesting that contractions are likely under autonomic rather than somatic control. How is a dolphin’s vagina shaped?
In the common bottlenose dolphins examined in a 2016 study, the vagina generally had one large internal fold that bisected the vaginal lumen. Other cetacean species can have different fold patterns.
Rank #4
Do all dolphins have the same vaginal folds?
No. Comparative research reports substantial variation in the number and size of vaginal folds among cetaceans. The bottlenose dolphin finding should not be treated as a description of every species.
What is the purpose of the folds?
Their function is not fully established. Researchers have proposed that folds may affect sperm or seawater movement and may help manage mechanical forces, but these remain functional hypotheses.
Best Value
How many dolphins were included in the anatomy study?
Orbach and colleagues’ 2016 study examined 18 common bottlenose dolphin specimens. Its tissue analysis included 90 histological samples from five specimens.
