It combined a servo-driven dry-food dispenser, an Alexa skill, sensors and camera monitoring, and Amazon Dash Replenishment for planned food reordering. The project is useful as an engineering reference, but its original skill, cloud setup, product links and replenishment flow are not guaranteed to work in 2026.
What the project built
The project connected five pieces: a mechanical feeder, a Raspberry Pi controller, a custom Alexa skill, sensors for food-status estimates, and Amazon Dash Replenishment. The 2017 write-up and its Hackster documentation describe a custom build rather than a packaged appliance.
- Dispenser: A paddle wheel moved dry food through a custom enclosure made from a two-gallon bucket and PVC parts. A continuous-rotation servo turned the wheel.
- Controller: A Raspberry Pi received remote commands, operated the servo, read a distance sensor and handled communications with cloud services.
- Alexa: A custom skill translated spoken requests into backend actions. The original system used AWS services and MQTT messaging to pass commands to the Pi.
- Monitoring: An ultrasonic sensor estimated food remaining in the hopper. A camera and image-comparison code estimated bowl fullness in rough steps—0%, 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%.
- Replenishment: Dash Replenishment was intended to link the device’s inventory reporting to a selected cat-food product and support low-supply alerts or reordering.

Sensors and camera → status reporting / replenishment logicThe cloud side was more than a simple voice assistant connection. The documentation lists AWS IoT Device Shadow, Lambda/API Gateway-style integration, DynamoDB, S3 and account-linking/token handling among the project components. It identifies a DynamoDB table named Cat_Feeder_Config with a UserId partition key, and an example S3 bucket named CatFeeder. These are historical implementation details, not a current setup recipe.
What Alexa could do
The original build documented requests to dispense 1, 2, 3 or 4 ounces, ask when the cat was last fed, check whether food remained, and check whether the feeder needed refilling. It also supported photo or status updates through the connected system. Treat these as historical capabilities, not guaranteed phrases or features in the current Alexa service.

There are several different meanings of “Alexa-compatible,” and they are not interchangeable:
- Custom skill: The approach used by this project. Alexa interprets custom requests and invokes backend logic, which then sends a message to the feeder.
- Native smart-home integration: A device exposes standardized controls and appears as a supported smart-home device.
- Alexa app or routine: The app may provide device setup or automation, but that alone does not mean Alexa can accurately control portion size or confirm food was dispensed.
The 2017 documentation does not establish that the original skill remains available, meets current platform requirements or can be reused unchanged.
What “Amazon Dash” meant—and what it means now
In this project, “Amazon Dash” meant Dash Replenishment, not a physical Dash Button attached to the feeder. The intended workflow involved assigning the feeder a unique identity, linking an Amazon account, selecting a replenishment product, supplying shipping and payment details, and storing a token for later use. The device still needed software and sensors to estimate inventory; Amazon could not infer how much kibble remained just because a feeder was connected.

Amazon’s current Dash Replenishment documentation describes a developer service for connected devices. It can use inventory reporting to notify customers when a consumable is low and support reordering. Amazon now calls smart-home skills smart-home add-ons in this documentation; existing integrations are described as continuing to operate normally. Current integrations require supported device capabilities and inventory reporting, account linking, product registration and marketplace-specific availability. Certification may also be required. The physical-button concept is separate: Amazon says it sunset physical Dash Buttons in favor of newer replenishment features such as Alexa Smart Reorders. A button does not measure feeder inventory, and Dash Replenishment is not a plug-in feature that automatically works with every smart feeder.
For a modern implementation, do not assume the project’s 2017 registration endpoints, skill listing, tokens or cloud configuration remain valid. Treat the Dash portion as a developer integration that must be checked against current Amazon requirements and tested for the intended marketplace.

The infrared sensor keeps checking and stops food dispensing if the food outlet is blocked.
How accurate was the feeding and monitoring?
The Hackster build says the servo was calibrated at approximately one second per ounce. That was a calibration for that dispenser, food and mechanism—not a general conversion that can be copied to another feeder. Kibble size, shape, density, hopper level, bridging and motor behavior all affect the amount dispensed. Calibrate portions by weighing repeated servings on a kitchen scale, then verify them again after changing food or hardware.
Hopper level, bowl fullness and actual eating are different measurements. An ultrasonic sensor can estimate the surface of irregular kibble in a hopper; a camera can misread a bowl if the view changes or food is partly hidden. Neither tells you that the cat ate the food. A full hopper does not prove a serving reached the bowl, and an empty bowl does not prove the cat consumed its contents.
The original mechanical measurements—including a 1.125-inch-diameter, 1-inch-long wooden dowel, a 5-inch opening in the bucket lid and an approximately 1.75–2-inch front opening—were specific to its chosen parts. They are build notes, not universal dimensions or a validated food-safe design.

Can you still build one?
Yes, but the sensible path is to build and validate the feeder locally first, then add remote features in stages. The project is easiest to understand as four ascending levels of effort:
- Basic: A timed dry-food dispenser with a local clock and schedule.
- Monitoring: Add hopper sensing, a chute or bowl sensor, and optional camera reporting.
- Remote and Alexa control: Add a supported smart-home integration or custom skill, with secure cloud messaging and clear status reporting.
- Dash Replenishment: Register the device and consumable, implement inventory reporting and account linking, check product availability, then test and complete applicable certification.
For most hobbyists, stopping before Dash Replenishment is the practical choice. The feeder-control project teaches Raspberry Pi, sensors, MQTT and voice integration without tying a pet’s supply to a commercial reorder workflow.
A safer modern architecture
- Keep meal schedules and the clock locally on the device so feeding continues if Wi-Fi, Alexa or a cloud service fails.
- Provide a physical manual-feed control and an obvious way to see whether the feeder is offline, low on food or jammed.
- Log every dispense attempt and reject duplicate commands. Consider confirmation for unusually large portions or rapid repeated requests.
- Measure actual output. A motor turning is not proof that food came out; consider a chute sensor, motor-current monitoring or a scale under the bowl.
- Use a unique identity for each feeder, TLS-secured MQTT, least-privilege cloud permissions and securely stored credentials. Do not embed AWS access keys in source code; protect linked-account tokens.
- Use a notification path beyond Alexa, and consider battery backup that actually runs the feeder—not merely a battery that preserves the clock.
Dash Replenishment is the advanced branch, not the foundation. Amazon’s current service requires a supported smart-home add-on, multi-capability skill or Alexa Connect Kit device, account linking, registered products and inventory reporting after use or at least daily. The device must also have a sound replenishment policy: define what “low” means, prevent repeat orders, and provide a way to reset inventory when food is refilled.

Build or buy?
Build if the goal is learning, custom mechanics, unusual portion logic or integrating sensors and a camera. It gives you control, but you also own calibration, cleaning, security, cloud maintenance and failure recovery.
Buy if you need a feeder for everyday use without maintaining hardware and backend services. Favor clear local scheduling, a physical manual feed, backup power that supports feeding, jam and low-food alerts, easy cleaning, a return policy and no required subscription for basic meals. If Alexa is essential, verify the manufacturer’s exact supported commands and whether controls are native smart-home functions or app/skill workarounds. Do not infer Dash support from Alexa compatibility.
As of the dossier’s August 16, 2026 price check, these first-party pages offered examples—not endorsements or verified Dash-compatible replacements:
- WOpet Cube Air WiFi Pet Feeder: listed at $49.99, with app scheduling, 4-liter capacity, feeding logs and low-food/jam/battery notifications. The reviewed page did not establish Alexa or Dash Replenishment support.
- PETKIT Fresh Element Solo: listed at a $69.99 sale price, with app scheduling, manual feeding, backup power and food-shortage alerts. Its page gives conflicting capacity figures—12 cups in one description and 3 liters/1.33 kg elsewhere—so confirm capacity with the seller. The reviewed page did not document Dash support.
- PETLIBRO Granary 2 series: product information describes app-based scheduling, intake tracking and camera features; some video/cloud options are optional. The reviewed first-party material did not establish Alexa or Dash Replenishment support. A June 2026 launch announcement listed the Granary 2 at $129.99, but current availability and pricing can change.
A simple locally scheduled feeder can be the better choice when missed meals matter more than voice control or remote monitoring. It avoids account, cloud and skill dependencies, though it will not provide remote status or automatic reordering.

Reliability and pet-safety checklist
Do not make an experimental connected feeder your cat’s only food source during an extended absence. Before relying on a new system:
- Run it under supervision for at least a week and record every scheduled and manual feeding.
- Weigh multiple portions with the cat’s actual kibble; repeat after changing food or refilling the hopper.
- Test a low hopper, an empty hopper and a simulated jam. Confirm the device reports failure rather than claiming a successful feed.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi and verify the local schedule continues. Restore connectivity and check that stale commands do not trigger duplicate servings.
- Remove main power and confirm what battery backup does, including how long it lasts and whether the motor still operates.
- Check alerts on the phone or other notification channel and have another person practice the manual feed procedure.
- Keep a backup food source and arrange for a person to inspect the device if you travel.
For cats with diabetes, kidney disease, medication-linked meals or other feeding-sensitive needs, ask your veterinarian before relying on an experimental feeder. The original build was designed for dry food; wet food needs a different approach, such as refrigerated compartments or timed trays, and is not an interchangeable use case. In multi-cat homes, a general hopper feeder also cannot reliably ensure that each cat gets only its own portion; separate feeders or access-controlled systems may be needed.
