Be careful: don’t make the mistake of crushing an Asian hornet

Crushing a suspected Asian hornet is unsafe. Venom can carry alarm compounds, but research does not prove that crushing an intact insect always attracts a swarm. Keep away, avoid nests and report sightings through the correct local service.

Do not try to crush, catch or provoke a suspected Asian hornet. Research shows that volatile chemicals in its sting venom can act as an alarm signal to other hornets, although the evidence does not prove that crushing an intact insect will always attract a swarm. The safer response is to move away, avoid any nest and report the sighting through your local official service.

What “Asian hornet” means

In UK guidance, “Asian hornet” means the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina (often identified as V. velutina nigrithorax). It is not the Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia. The names are sometimes confused, but they refer to different species.

The yellow-legged hornet is a non-native species that threatens honey bees and other pollinating insects. Away from its nest it is not generally aggressive; nest defence is the situation in which the danger increases. Welsh Government guidance advises people not to approach or disturb nests: Yellow-legged hornet guidance.

Should you crush an Asian hornet?

No. Crushing exposes you to a sting and may spread venom. If the insect is a yellow-legged hornet, its venom contains volatile compounds associated with alarm behaviour. The sensible rule is therefore simple: do not swat at, pick up or deliberately injure a suspected hornet.

Does crushing one attract other hornets?

The often-repeated warning needs a precise qualification. A 2017 study in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that sting-venom volatiles from V. velutina attracted workers and triggered attack behaviour. The researchers collected chemicals from attacked workers, dissected and crushed a worker’s venom gland, and tested venom-gland extracts from 15 colonies at two sites in China. Their conclusion was that the hornets use sting venom as an alarm pheromone: Cheng et al., 2017.

That experiment did not test whether crushing an entire, intact hornet reliably summons a swarm. It supports concern about venom and venom-gland odours, not a guarantee that every crushed insect will trigger other hornets. No published statistic establishes a specific risk percentage for crushing one.

How to identify the insect without handling it

Identification from a distance is safer than capture. A yellow-legged hornet typically has a very dark body, a broad orange band on the fourth abdominal segment and yellow ends to its legs. Defra describes it as smaller than the native UK hornet. A photograph can help experts, but take one only if you can do so without approaching the insect or nest.

Insect Key distinction Status in this context
Yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) Very dark body, orange fourth abdominal segment, yellow leg ends Non-native invasive species in UK guidance
Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia) Different, much larger species Not the species meant by UK “Asian hornet” advice
Native hornets and other lookalikes Markings and size vary; misidentification is possible Do not handle one to confirm its identity

What to do if you see a suspected Asian hornet

  1. Keep your distance. Do not swat, trap, crush or try to collect the insect.
  2. Leave any nest alone. Do not approach, shake, spray or attempt amateur removal. Hornets may defend a nest when they perceive a threat.
  3. Record the location. Note where and when you saw it.
  4. Take a clear photograph only if safe. Never move closer or put yourself between the insect and a nest for a picture.
  5. Report it through the correct local channel. Reporting routes differ by country and jurisdiction, so check current government instructions before using an app or hotline.

Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency asked the public to report suspected sightings so officials can investigate quickly. Professor Nicola Spence, the UK Chief Plant Health Officer, said on 20 May 2024: “By ensuring we are alerted to possible sightings as early as possible, the public can help us take swift and effective action to stamp out the threat posed by Asian hornets.” See the Defra and APHA notice.

  • High Quality: Made of PP and stainless steel, not easy to rust and fall off, which will be last for many years

Use the reporting guidance for your jurisdiction

Do not assume that a reporting app is monitored everywhere. The Government of Jersey specifically says its Asian Hornet Watch app is no longer regularly monitored, even though similar tools appear in guidance elsewhere: Jersey reporting information. Follow the current instructions from your local authority or official invasive-species service.

What the UK figures do—and do not—show

Defra and APHA reported 72 nests in 56 locations in their 2024 account of the UK response to credible sightings made during 2023. That was described as a record year for UK findings, and the release said the species was not yet established in the UK at that time. The figure is a dated surveillance result, not a current distribution map and not evidence of the risk posed by crushing an individual.

Wales’ guidance, published on 24 February 2026 and updated on 20 March 2026, reports that a dead nest found near Wrexham in January 2026 was the first confirmed Welsh discovery. It asks people to submit a clear photograph and location with a report.

If you are stung

Move away from the insect and seek medical help according to the severity of the reaction. Call emergency services immediately for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. Do not return to the nest or attempt to remove it yourself; tell responders where it is.

The safe takeaway

Venom-based alarm signalling is real, but “crushing an Asian hornet always attracts a swarm” goes beyond the evidence. Treat a suspected yellow-legged hornet as an insect to avoid, not an insect to test: keep clear, never disturb a nest, and report the sighting through the current official channel for your area.
