The best product for cat urine odor is usually not an air freshener: it is an enzymatic cleaner applied to the urine-soaked surface. A fragrance can mask the smell briefly, and an activated-carbon air purifier may help with lingering airborne odor after cleanup, but neither removes urine from carpet, upholstery, or flooring.
What works best for cat urine smell?
Start with an enzymatic cleaner made for pet urine. The ASPCA advises: “Clean accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors.” Enzyme-based cleaners break down urine compounds rather than simply covering the smell; veterinarian-reviewed PetMD guidance also advises against ammonia-based cleaners.
The right treatment depends on where the urine went. A surface that looks dry may still have urine in carpet backing, padding, upholstery filling, or another porous material. If odor persists after cleaning, the source may be deeper than the visible stain.
How to get rid of cat pee smell
- Locate the affected area. Check beyond the visible stain if the smell persists. An ultraviolet light can be an optional aid for locating possible spots, but it does not treat odor.
- Blot fresh urine. Use absorbent towels to remove as much as possible before it dries. Avoid starting by flooding a fresh puddle.
- Apply an enzymatic cleaner to the contaminated depth. Follow the product label for surface compatibility, coverage, saturation, and dwell time. A light spray on the surface may not reach urine in padding or other underlying material.
- Let the area dry fully. Keep your cat away while the cleaner is wet and during drying. Do not combine cleaners unless the product label explicitly says it is safe to do so.
- Reassess after drying. Old or deep contamination may need repeated treatment; severely affected porous material may need replacement if odor remains.
Humane-society cleanup guidance likewise recommends removing as much fresh urine as possible, then treating remaining odor or staining with an enzymatic cleaner and allowing items to air-dry when possible.

Will an air purifier remove cat urine odor?
A portable purifier can help with residual airborne gaseous odor after the urine source has been cleaned. For gases, the U.S. EPA recommends a portable air cleaner with an activated-carbon filter or another filter designed to remove gases. A purifier cannot clean urine out of carpet padding, upholstery, or a subfloor.
HEPA filtration may help capture particles such as dander, but it should not be mistaken for gas or odor removal. The EPA says, “The CADR rating system is for particles only.” Use CADR to assess particle-cleaning performance, not as a cat-urine odor-removal score.

Urine-removal products vary widely in efficacy, according to AAFP/ISFM guidelines. There is no supported universal brand ranking or comparative numerical score that establishes one cleaner as objectively best. Compare the label directions and match the product to the surface and depth of the contamination.
The Humane Society of Missouri names Anti-Icky Poo, Outright Stain and Odor Eliminator, Nature’s Miracle, Urine Off, and Urine Erase among enzyme- or bacteria-based products, and identifies Cat Off as a species-specific odor counteractant. Formulas and directions can change, so check the current label for the exact product and surface.

Safety and when to get help
Do not use ammonia-based products for cat urine cleanup, and follow cleaner labels for ventilation and use. ASPCA Poison Control says most enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset if ingested and recommends letting treated areas dry before pets return. Prevent licking of wet cleaner.
If your cat keeps urinating outside the litter box, arrange a veterinary evaluation. Cleaning and odor-control products do not address medical or behavioral causes.
