There is no single best driftwood for every planted aquarium. Choose the individual piece that fits your tank’s dimensions and aquascape, then weigh its buoyancy, preparation time and effect on water color. For a branching layout with minimal tannin staining, aquarium Spider Wood is a strong starting point. For a dense piece that sinks readily, Mopani is useful if you accept tannin release and possible pH effects.

Quick comparison

Wood What the manufacturer describes Best fit Main trade-off
Spider Wood Suitable for planted tanks and very low in tannins; approximate sizes from 8–12 inches to 24–30 inches. Branching structures, root-like forms and layouts where clearer water is preferred. Natural pieces differ in shape, dimensions and buoyancy; plant-attachment performance is not established by the cited source.
Mopani Dense, suitable for use with plants, naturally tannin-leaching and described as immediately sinking; approximate sizes from 6–8 inches to 20–24 inches. Heavy-looking focal pieces or hardscape that should settle quickly. Releases tannins that can turn water brown and may lower pH; separate soaking is recommended.
Other natural driftwood, including Malaysian-category products Natural pieces vary in whether and how quickly they sink. When a particular piece has the exact silhouette or scale your design needs. You must assess that individual piece and allow for soaking, weighting and water-color changes.

These are manufacturer and aquarium-care descriptions, not independent comparative tests. Natural wood is variable, so inspect the actual piece rather than buying by species name alone.

How to choose the right piece

Start with the aquascape’s visual role

  • Branching canopy or root effect: Spider Wood’s branching form is a practical starting point.
  • Single heavy focal element: Mopani’s dense, substantial appearance can anchor a composition.
  • Species-specific silhouette: Choose the individual piece whose bends, branches and contact points work with your plants and hardscape, regardless of category.

Match the wood to tank dimensions

Measure the aquarium’s length, height and front-to-back depth before purchase. Compare those measurements with the real piece, including branches that may spread beyond its main body. Zoo Med’s listed size bands are approximate, not guarantees of a particular shape or volume. Leave room for substrate, plant growth, equipment access and fish swimming space.

Decide how much tannin staining you can accept

Zoo Med describes Spider Wood as very low in tannins. It describes Mopani as tannin-leaching. Tannins can tint water brown and may lower pH; the effect depends on the aquarium’s buffering and other conditions. Choose low-tannin Spider Wood when visual clarity is a priority. Choose Mopani when its density and appearance matter more than clear water.

Check buoyancy instead of assuming

Even within one type, pieces differ. Fluval recommends soaking natural driftwood in a clean bucket for about a week, changing the water daily (or once or twice daily in its care guidance), and notes that some pieces still need weighting during the first weeks in the aquarium.

Preparing driftwood before it enters a planted tank

  1. Buy aquarium-sold wood. Aqueon identifies driftwood from aquarium stores as the safer choice than an unverified outdoor find.
  2. Rinse it thoroughly. Remove loose dirt and debris without soaps or household chemicals.
  3. Soak it in a separate clean container. Keep it out of the aquarium while it releases tannins and absorbs water.
  4. Change the soaking water regularly. Fluval suggests about a week as a starting point with daily changes; natural variation means there is no universal finish time.
  5. For Mopani, continue until the soak water becomes much lighter. Zoo Med describes the progression from dark brown toward very light water as an indication that tannin release has decreased, not proof that all tannins are gone.
  6. Consider boiling where practical. Fluval cites boiling as another way to reduce discoloration. Use a container large enough for the piece and handle hot water safely.
  7. Test the fit and stability in the empty aquarium. Confirm that it cannot press against the glass, block equipment or topple into plants.
  8. Install with temporary support if needed. Fluval notes that some wood may need to be weighed down for the first couple of weeks.

What to expect after installation

Brown or tea-colored water

Tannin staining can persist after soaking. Frequent small water changes can gradually reduce it. Aqueon also cites additional activated carbon as an option, but carbon can remove plant nutrients, so it is not a cost-free solution for a planted aquarium.

White or gray fuzz

A new white film on driftwood is commonly a temporary biofilm. Fluval says fish and shrimp may eat it and that it eventually goes away; Aqueon likewise describes new driftwood fuzz as usually harmless. You can brush it away if its appearance bothers you, but do not use aggressive chemical treatment based on appearance alone.

pH movement

Tannins may lower pH, but driftwood is not a precise pH-control method. The size of any change depends on the water’s buffering and other conditions. With animals present, avoid sudden or drastic chemistry changes; monitor the aquarium rather than adding wood to chase a target number.

A practical buying checklist

  • Does the actual piece fit the tank without crowding swimming space?
  • Does its branch structure support the planned plant positions and sight lines?
  • Is the expected tannin level compatible with your preferred water appearance?
  • Can you soak it separately and change water for days or longer?
  • Does it sink, or do you have a safe plan to hold it down temporarily?
  • Is it sold for aquarium use rather than collected from an unknown environment?
  • Can you remove it later without dismantling the entire planted layout?

Which should you buy?

Choose Spider Wood when

You want a branchy, root-like structure and would prefer less tannin staining. Select by the individual piece’s dimensions and silhouette, because the low-tannin description does not make every piece interchangeable.

Choose Mopani when

You want dense, heavy-looking wood that is described as sinking immediately and you are prepared to soak it separately, manage brown water and monitor pH.

Choose another natural piece when

A different piece has the exact scale or shape your composition needs. Treat buoyancy, soak time and tannin release as properties to evaluate for that piece, not assumptions guaranteed by a category label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can driftwood eliminate the need for a filter?

No. Driftwood changes the aquascape and can release tannins; it is not a substitute for filtration, water changes or routine aquarium maintenance.

How long should driftwood be soaked?

There is no universal duration. Fluval suggests about a week with regular water changes as a starting point, while natural pieces may require longer soaking or temporary weighting.

The Bottom Line

For most planted layouts, start by comparing the actual pieces in front of you. Pick Spider Wood for branching form and lower expected tannin release; pick Mopani for density and fast sinking when you accept tannin management. In either case, soak outside the tank, monitor stability and treat water chemistry as something to measure—not something driftwood can control precisely.
