Best Full-Spectrum LED Aquarium Lights for Planted Tanks

Compare freshwater planted-tank LED lights by aquarium fit, plant needs, light-at-depth data and controls—not by a “full spectrum” label or wattage alone.

There is no single best full-spectrum LED for every freshwater planted aquarium. Match a light to your tank’s length and depth, the plants you want to grow, and the amount of light reaching the substrate. The models below offer different fits and features; their published specifications are manufacturer data, not results from a standardized independent comparison.

How to choose a full-spectrum aquarium light

“Full spectrum” describes a light’s spectral range, not whether it will deliver enough usable light to the bottom of your aquarium. A fixture can have adjustable colors or a plant-oriented spectrum and still be a poor fit for a particular tank’s dimensions or plants.

Start with tank dimensions and plant needs

Tank length helps determine whether a fixture will span the aquarium, while depth affects how much light reaches plants below the surface. Aqueon says light selection depends on plant species and aquarium height, noting that taller aquariums need a stronger source because light does not penetrate water well. Identify the plants you intend to keep and consider their lighting needs alongside tank height before choosing a fixture. Aqueon’s aquatic plant basics guide

Look for light-at-depth information

Wattage alone does not show how much light reaches a plant. Aqueon identifies lumens, PAR and PUR as more meaningful measurements for planted tanks. When a manufacturer publishes PAR, check the depth and model associated with the reading. Fluval advises relating a plant’s PAR to the value under which it was grown; readings from different brands should not be treated as directly comparable unless their measurement conditions are known. Compare controls and mounting

Consider whether you want independently adjustable colors and a programmable schedule, and check how the fixture attaches to your aquarium. Water-resistance ratings can also matter around a tank, but they do not remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Verify current mounting compatibility for the exact model before buying.

Full-spectrum LED lights to compare

These freshwater, plant-oriented options serve different purposes. Product details below are from the manufacturers’ published information; the available figures do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking.

Fluval Plant 3.0: a range of tank lengths and programmable control

The Plant 3.0 line is a candidate when you want a planted-aquarium light with adjustable color channels and a scheduled daily cycle. Fluval’s USA product page lists the length ranges and model wattages in the table above. Its 22 W model is listed at 442 PAR / 24,000 lux at 3 inches, 227 / 11,000 at 6 inches, and 80 / 4,330 at 12 inches. These are Fluval’s specifications for that model and those depths, accessed in 2026—not independent measurements or a guarantee of the light level in a particular aquarium. See Fluval’s Plant 3.0 product page

Fluval Plant Pro: positioned for demanding aquascapes

Plant Pro is the more directly targeted option to investigate if your aquascape calls for a high-powered fixture. For the 90 W Plant Pro 120, Fluval lists 1,500 PAR / 74,000 lux at 3 inches; 660 / 38,000 at 6 inches; 290 / 18,000 at 12 inches; and 170 / 10,000 at 18 inches. Those are manufacturer specifications for the named model and depths, accessed in 2026. They are not an independent comparison with the Plant 3.0 readings. Compact clip-on option: check plant requirements carefully

Aqueon’s planted clip-on listing offers a compact format and states a capacity of up to 20 gallons for its clip-on lights; the planted version lists 60 LEDs. Those facts do not establish that the fixture supplies adequate light for a particular plant species. Treat it as an option to evaluate for compatibility and plant needs, not as a proven choice for demanding growth. See Aqueon’s listing

Set a photoperiod that fits the aquarium

Fluval says, “The typical photoperiod for live plants is 8 to 10 hours,” while noting that different plant species have different lighting requirements. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a universal prescription. Use your plants’ needs and the fixture’s controls to set the daily schedule; the cited sources do not establish a schedule that prevents algae in every tank. Fluval Plant 3.0 FAQ

Make the final choice

  1. Measure the aquarium. Note its length and the depth from the light to the plants, especially those near the substrate.
  2. Choose the plants and growth goal. A light suitable for one plant selection may not suit another; match the fixture to the species and intended setup.
  3. Compare model-specific readings. Where PAR or other light data are available, use the stated depth and model. Do not rank brands by figures measured under unknown or different conditions.
  4. Check the practical fit. Confirm aquarium coverage, fixture dimensions, mounting method, controls and water-exposure guidance for the exact model.
  5. Verify current buying details. Prices, availability, warranties and app compatibility were not compared here; check the manufacturer and retailer information for your region before purchase.

The cited recommendations concern freshwater planted aquariums. Reef or marine lighting is a separate selection problem and should not be treated as interchangeable with plant-oriented freshwater fixtures.
