Yes. The pet fish sold as a “betta” is usually Betta splendens, commonly called the Siamese fighting fish. “Siamese fighting fish” is a common name for this fish, not a separate species. The name reflects its territorial behavior and its historical association with Siam, now Thailand.
Are betta fish Siamese fighting fish?
In ordinary pet-shop usage, yes. Betta splendens is the species most people mean when they say “betta fish,” and Siamese fighting fish is its established common name. Selective breeding has produced many colors and fin shapes, but those varieties remain domesticated forms of the same species.
The wider genus is more diverse. Aqueon notes that more than 70 recognized Betta species exist, so not every fish called a betta is necessarily Betta splendens. For the typical aquarium pet, however, the two names refer to the same fish.
Why are they called fighting fish?
Male Betta splendens are territorial. Two males should not be housed together because displays can escalate into serious injury. This behavior explains the “fighting fish” name; it does not mean a betta needs to fight to be healthy or that aggression is appropriate entertainment.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
A single male can sometimes live in a carefully planned community aquarium, but compatibility is not automatic. Tank size, cover, line-of-sight breaks and the temperament of every fish matter. Remove a fish immediately if chasing, fin damage or sustained stress appears.
How long do betta fish live?
Published care guides place a well-cared-for betta’s expected lifespan at roughly three to five years. PetMD’s care sheet lists an average of three to five years with proper care, and its DVM-reviewed article updated December 23, 2024 gives the same range. Aqueon’s care guide gives an average of three to four years.
| Source | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| PetMD care sheet, updated April 27, 2026 | 3–5 years with proper care | An average care-guide estimate, not a guarantee for an individual fish |
| PetMD DVM-reviewed article, updated December 23, 2024 | 3–5 years | Most bettas are described as living within this range |
| Aqueon Betta Care Guide, accessed September 30, 2026 | 3–4 years | A slightly narrower average estimate |
These ranges overlap. Age at purchase, genetics, previous conditions and day-to-day husbandry all affect an individual fish, and none of these figures promises that a particular product or care change will extend life.

What size tank does a betta need?
Use a properly equipped aquarium rather than a decorative bowl. PetMD’s care sheet lists 2.5 gallons or larger and describes 5–10 gallons as ideal; a separate PetMD facts article describes at least 10 gallons as ideal. Aqueon emphasizes that larger habitats are more stable and easier to maintain.
The practical lesson is stability, not a magic cutoff: choose the largest suitable aquarium you can equip and maintain consistently. More water generally gives temperature and water chemistry more room to change slowly, while a very small container leaves less margin for missed maintenance or uneaten food.
- Fit the aquarium with a secure lid, heater, thermometer and low- or adjustable-flow filter.
- Leave unobstructed access to the surface, where bettas periodically breathe air.
- Use smooth hiding and resting places; sharp or rough decorations can tear fins.
What temperature should a betta tank be?
PetMD recommends 76–81°F and calls for a heater and thermometer. Aqueon gives a broader 76–85°F range in one care guide and 76–81°F in its setup advice. A sensible operating target is the narrower 76–81°F range, held steadily and checked with a thermometer rather than inferred from room temperature.

The 3.5 gallon swimming space is an ideal home for a Betta, small schooling fish (like Cardinal Tetra or Zebra Danios), and ornamental shrimp (such as Red Cherry or Blue Velvet)
Adjustable, appropriately sized heating equipment is preferable to relying on a warm room. Sudden temperature swings are a greater husbandry concern than chasing a single exact decimal.
Water quality and filtration
Bettas can gulp air because they have a labyrinth organ, but that adaptation does not make poor water or a tiny container suitable. They still need clean, stable, conditioned water and filtration with gentle flow.
Cycle and test the aquarium
- Set up the aquarium, heater, thermometer and low-flow filter before adding the fish.
- Condition tap water according to the conditioner’s directions before it enters the aquarium.
- Test regularly for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
- During a new tank’s cycle, test frequently; PetMD says cycling can take four to six weeks.
- Do not add a fish simply because the water looks clear. Clear water can still contain harmful ammonia or nitrite.
Keep the current gentle
Choose a filter whose flow can be reduced or adjusted. Bettas with long fins can struggle in a strong current, and excessive turbulence can prevent comfortable resting and surface access.

Water changes and routine maintenance
Maintenance depends on aquarium volume, filtration, stocking and test results. For filtered aquariums, Aqueon suggests either a 10% weekly or 25% every two weeks partial-water-change routine, with similar guidance for five- to ten-gallon setups. Treat this as a starting schedule, not a universal rule for every tank.
- Use conditioned replacement water with a temperature close to the aquarium’s water.
- Remove uneaten food and visible waste before it decomposes.
- Use test results to identify whether changes need to be more frequent or larger.
- Keep equipment operating reliably and check the thermometer routinely.
What do betta fish eat?
Bettas are carnivores. Feed a high-protein betta pellet or another appropriate protein-rich food in modest portions. Small meals reduce waste and make it easier to see whether the fish is eating normally.
- Offer only an amount the fish can consume without food accumulating on the bottom.
- Remove leftovers promptly to protect water quality.
- Keep the diet consistent and observe body condition rather than feeding by guesswork.
Can bettas live with other fish?
Male bettas must not share a tank with other males. Some individual bettas can live in compatible community arrangements, but success requires adequate space, careful species selection and close observation. A community tank is not automatically safe merely because the other fish are small.

Why the labyrinth organ does not justify a bowl
The labyrinth organ allows a betta to take atmospheric air at the surface. It is an important adaptation, but it is not evidence that a betta thrives in a cup or unfiltered bowl. Surface breathing and habitat quality are separate issues: the fish still benefits from adequate swimming space, stable warm water, filtration, testing and safe cover.
A practical betta setup checklist
- Aquarium: Choose a suitably sized tank; published guidance ranges from 2.5 gallons or larger to 5–10 gallons as ideal, while another PetMD article calls at least 10 gallons ideal.
- Cover: Use a secure lid while leaving room for normal surface access.
- Heat: Maintain and monitor approximately 76–81°F.
- Filtration: Use a low- or adjustable-flow filter.
- Water preparation: Condition tap water and test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
- Decor: Provide smooth, fin-safe hiding and resting areas without blocking the surface.
- Food: Offer small portions of high-protein betta food and remove leftovers.
- Social plan: Never house male bettas together; treat community housing as a monitored compatibility experiment, not a guarantee.
What matters most for a long, healthy life?
Focus on consistent husbandry: warm water that does not fluctuate sharply, stable and tested chemistry, gentle filtration, adequate space, safe furnishings and restrained feeding. As PetMD’s April 27, 2026 care sheet puts it, bettas do best with “stable, clean water, warm temperatures, and a setup that helps them feel secure (think: gentle flow, hiding spots, and open surface access for breathing).”
